Lindsay Lohan Issue On Paris Fashion Week

Hollywood starlet Lindsay Lohan has revealed that she used supermodel Kate Moss as a human shield at the French fashion collections.

Lohan was swarmed by reporters and paparazzi during her debut as artistic advisor for Emanuel Ungaro.

One journalist even crawled under a photographer's legs to try and snatch a quick quote from Lindsay.

But Lindsay - who is well-known for visiting her favorite LA restaurant in disguise - turned the tables one night in Paris.

She told a British reporter that she just used Moss as a human shield to get away from the crush of press.

“At the Testino party, Kate Moss was walking out," she said.

"I saw her leaving and was, like, ‘Go now!’ I was walking behind her. She went one way and took the photographers with her. I went straight to my car.”

Paris Fashion Week: Pixie Lott

Pixie Lott has left the UK music scene for now to rock the fashionistas in the French capital.

At a private gig at Karl Lagerfeld's pop-up club Fendi O on Tuesday she was introduced to the celebrity crowd during Paris Fashion Week.

But down-to-earth Essex-born Pixie said she wouldn't let all the glamour and the popularity go to her head.

"I don't really get phased by too much, and I really hate big-headed people, so I don't really think that that is ever going to be a problem. I think that I have just got such great friends and family and it just feels exactly the same as before, everyone treats me the same, I am still exactly the same,"

In previous years Lagerfeld choose The Gossip and Amy Winehouse to play for the bi-annual Fendi party.

The exclusive event opened the stage to Pixie to present her new album to the Europeans.

Turn It Up was released in the UK in September.

Paris Fashion Week: Emanuel Ungaro Collection With Lindsay Lohan

It was a deadly collision of celebrity culture and fashion culture on Sunday at the debut of the new Emanuel Ungaro collection with Lindsay Lohan as artistic advisor and Estrella Archs as designer. When Lohan came out for a runway bow, her eyes were full of tears. And it's easy to see why. After all the hullabaloo over her appointment a month ago, with some fashion insiders suggesting it was an insult to anyone who had ever really worked in design, it had to have been the walk of shame to end all.

The fashion crowd is a tough one, and the fangs were out for this collection from the beginning. Unfortunately, the clothes--reportedly whipped together in a mere three weeks -- didn't do anything to defy low expectations.

It's difficult to know whom to blame -- Lohan for taking the job or Ungaro President Mounir Moufarrige for thinking he could install a troubled Hollywood starlet with no fashion training at a venerable French house (even one that cycles through designers faster than Lohan cycles through rehab stints). Or maybe it's the fault of the industry in general, which has put a premium on fast, flashy and addictive fashion, over forward-thinking and creative fashion.
The impulse to focus on the house's signature shade of hot pink was a good one, and that's how the collection began, with a tight minidress draped over one shoulder. There were a lot of minidresses in this show, many of them so short, they seemed to be inviting a TMZ crotch shot.

The second design element was the heart, in a repeating sequin pattern on one jacket and repeating cutouts with sequins peeking out from underneath on another. These were partytime clothes -- ruched leggings in bright blue and purple (Lohan has her own line of leggings too -- 6126), pink harem pants and bandeau bikini tops with heart-shaped charms nestled between the breasts.

But by far the worst offense were the glittery heart-shaped pasties worn under suit jackets. In a word, why? They were just begging to be laughed at. A larger version of the heart pasties also turned up on some of the models' heads.

Nothing in the collection evidenced any real skill or discernible design work. In fact, you could probably find a lot of it already on the shelves at Kitson. I did hear someone remark that they liked the shoes, which had narrow, stair-step heels.

Still, there's really no defending this misguided collection, other than as a desperate bid for attention from a house that hasn't mattered since its founder retired in 2004. I just don't think it's the kind of attention they had in mind.

Soft, sweet and saucy was the message from Betty Jackson’s spring/summer 2010 collection.

Her inspiration was the idea of a French demoiselle being filmed by Jean-Luc Goddard in Shanghai, leading to a lot of ooh-la-la and some extremely wearable clothes.

Ruffles, frills and flounces were a key detail whether worn as a ruff, sparkling with crystals at the neck, decorating a peplum jacket or trimming the hem of a jacket or skirt. The bra-bodice, little bloomers and French knickers were equally important to the look - a trend increasingly apparent at London Fashion Week.

Here, at Jackson, they came in contrasting pastel, floral prints, in shades of ice-pink and mint, and designed to be seen - beneath rough linen jackets, trimmed with broderie anglaise, worn with floppy, floral trousers, or worn over button-to-the neck blouses.

The boudoir theme was also echoed in little floral sundresses with draped hips, which showed a frill of purple lace at the décolletage. In more minimal, contemporary mode were short-sleeved, navy dresses with a pleated detail on the bodice and a to-the-knee skirt; easy coats, tunics and crop-trousers in beige.

A-line coats, smocks and waisted dresses came in silver lame and a rose-pink brocade, often accessorised with a sparkly ruff for a funky, but flattering look for after-dark.

Lindsay Lohan is "nervous" about the upcoming House of Emanuel Ungaro fashion show.

The 23-year-old star, who was unveiled as the French fashion house's artistic advisor earlier this week, can't wait for the Paris Fashion Week show, but is anxious about how the clothes will be received.

She explained: "I'm nervous about the show the way I get nervous about a film. Maybe a little bit more about this because it's a little more personal."

The 'Mean Girls' actress added any criticism will feel particularly harsh as she feels so closely linked to the brand.

She said: "In a film I'm playing someone else and people can relate to that character. This is very much me and I'm putting all of my efforts into it."

Lindsay - who already has her own range of leggings and fake tan - will work with Spanish designer Estrella Archs, giving her own ideas and input into upcoming collections.

She said earlier this week: "I kind of oversee everything Archs does, while working with her. Different generations have different ideas."

Designer Amy Molyneux - who already works for the French label - said of Lindsay's appointment: "She does have an eye for fashion. I like the way she dresses. Her house is a mini-department store. She changes outfits five times a day."

Los Angeles - Sundance Channel is set to give viewers a rare look behind the velvet rope of runway shows. The four-part original fashion series "The Day Before" will cover the global fashion scenes and calendar.

Directed by Loic Prigent, the series will give viewers an inside look at the creative process and drama leading to some of the most prestigious fashion shows in top fashion cities.

Starting on Wednesday, September 9 at 10 p.m., "The Day Before Sonia Rykiel" will feature the French fashion designer known for her chic and playful knitwear. The Parisian runway show in October marks her house's 40th anniversary.

On September 9, "The Day Before Proenza Schouler" will feature designer duo Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez send out their Fall 2009 collection in New York in February.

Friday will feature "The Day Before Fendi by Karl Lagerfeld" will center on the highly revered Karl Lagerfeld as he presents his Fendi Fall 2009 collection in Milan in March.

The last day will be "The Day Before Jean Paul Gaultier," an episode which showcases Jean Paul Gaultier's haute couture collection in a Paris show.

The series will capture the designers at their key moment when creativity and business come together.

"The Day Before" will air on the Sundance Channel from September 9.

New York - Crystal Renn was miserable as a super-thin model who had heart palpitations when she'd worry that there might be calories in Diet Coke.

Her moment of epiphany came when "I couldn't walk another step without being exhausted, or having hair clumps falling out." She knew she needed to live in the body she was supposed to have — specifically a curvy size 12.

In a new memoir "Hungry," Renn, now a plus-size model, exposes her struggles with weight, health and self-esteem, fueled by the industry she says she still loves.

That is, she loves it now that she has been accepted — even embraced — by the fashion world.

"I got to my lowest point, when I couldn't go lower, and it was either, 'I'm going to die and not accomplish the dream,' or, 'I can become a plus-size model and keep the dream,'" she said in an interview. "I am healthy now, the healthiest I've ever been in my life — both physically and mentally."

Writing "Hungry" with Marjorie Ingall for Simon & Schuster was an important part of the healing process, said Renn, 23.

She had told her story before, but always in a quick hit for some magazine celebrating the novelty of an hourglass shape on its pages. The book is her attempt to move the needle on how people — everyone from wide-eyed young girls to jaded fashion insiders — perceive beauty.

"I'd like to see everyone take on the attitude that there are women of all different shapes and sizes as 'the beauty ideal,' and that it's not one type or another. There are women who are naturally a size 2 — you can't forget them, and that's discrimination the other way," Renn said. "All women bring something different to the table and we have to appreciate them all."

Some in the fashion, modeling and magazine industries have been receptive to the idea, she said, noting that she's still working with her fuller figure in Vogue, Glamour, on the runway with Jean Paul Gaultier and in ads for Dolce & Gabbana.

For one star-studded evening, it seemed like the good old days of 2007 for the beleaguered New York fashion world. Designers, models and actresses strutted along the red carpet to honour the most powerful figure in their industry – Anna Wintour, the legendary British editor-in-chief of US Vogue.

They were attending last week’s glitzy premiere of The September Issue, a fly-on-the-wall documentary by film-makers given unprecedented access to the hallowed portals of the fashion bible and the famously formidable force that leads it.

Designers such as Vera Wang, Oscar de la Renta, Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan and Sean “Diddy” Combs and actresses Sienna Miller and Renee Zellweger joined a clutch of statuesque models, assorted fashionistas and Manhattan power players for the splashy event.

Peering out from beneath her distinctive pageboy haircut and occasionally donning her trademark dark sunglasses, Miss Wintour, 59, was also there, of course.

The behind-the-scenes footage follows Miss Wintour and her team for eight months during 2007 as they put together the September issue – traditionally, the most important of the year as the magazine is packed with adverts aimed at autumn shoppers.

The edition turned out to be the biggest in industry history, weighing in at a whopping five pounds and 840 pages, included 725 of glossy premium-cost ads. It confirmed the magazine’s behemoth status.

And the cover boasts the sort of mass appeal articles – “Stylish Steals and Smart Splurges” and “Fall Fashion Fun” – that have previously been anathema to the unapologetically elitist Miss Wintour during her two-decade reign.

There is little doubt that McKinsey will recommend much deeper cuts and job losses, although the New York Post reported on Friday that for the French fashion shows, Miss Wintour will be staying at the Ritz in Paris as usual, with little expense spared for her entourage.

With less than three weeks before the start of New York Fashion Week, the mood in the world fashion industry capital is grim. The event was once synonymous with extravagance, excess and self-congratulation, but now insiders are focused on simple commercial survival.

So the release of The September Issue, with its reminder of a now apparently halcyon epoch, so recent yet so remote, is providing some much-needed relief for the industry. It might also offer some valuable ammunition for the bean-counters of McKinsey.

Everything from ‘80s-inspired clothing, western wear and bohemian chic is in fashion for fall, according to local retailers.

High school and college-age girls have plenty of options when shopping for back to school.“Plaid is huge,” said Mary Lucy Yowell, manager of Belk department store, adding that the tartan-style plaid is widely popular. Denim is another must have for fall from skinny jeans, barely boot-cut jeans (a cross between a skinny jean and boot cut), baggy boyfriend jeans and distressed jeans, even though most of those can’t be worn to high school.

“Borrow your boyfriend’s jeans or buy a pair for yourself,” said Judy Goldie, owner of Trendy Pieces on the Public Square.Mallory Rickman, assistant manager of Delia’s at The Avenue, said everything from plaid dresses, shirts and scarves are hot for fall. “We can’t seem to keep the plaid in stock,” she said.Taking plaid even further, A’GACI Co-Manager Jamie Johnson said the country western look is the latest look in fashion. "It is really cute,” she said. The look is complete with long button-up shirts and ankle boots, sometimes called booties, Johnson said.

Yowell said boots are in fashion in a big way this fall from booties to western-style boots. Goldie said the slouchy jacket also is back for this fall and winter. “Throw it on with a pair of fitted dress slacks or jeans or over a mini-dress,” she said. Vests are another must have this fall, according to local retailers. They range from the hippie chic to motorcycle chick. “All kinds of different vests, you name it,” Yowell said are in fashion, adding that more structured vests are widely seen but vests also are being seen in sweaters.

Longer vests worn over shirts and pants are being cinched with a belt, Johnson said, adding that it is a really cute look for teens. Express at The Avenue is even carrying leather, motorcycle vests. “Those also go great with graphic tees,” said Erica Phemister, from Express.

V-neck graphic tees are a big seller at Express, she said. Graphic tees could have anything on it from peace signs to flowers and embroidery. But fall fashion is dominated by looks from the ‘80s, Phemister said, which means lose shirts, leggings and bright colors. “Cowneck sweaters are coming back in and off the shoulder tops,” she said. “Leggings with tunics are really in right now.”Goldie said printed leggings and tights will “throw some fun into your outfits.”Along with that this fall is going to be filled with “plenty of color,” she said. “Neon will be big and also gorgeous jewel tones, purples, teals and deeper blues.”

Bright colors are showing up in corduroy and other types of pants. “The girls go crazy over them,” Rickman said. But don’t forget about your hair, which completes any outfit. Stylist Kenneth Darrell of Studio 627 said one of the latest looks is a side ponytail. “They are fashionable, in style and easy to achieve,” he said.

Other looks include side swept bangs, which are sometimes braided or French braided and wavy hair. Sue Millsap, owner of Salon 536, said the graduated bob with a disconnect at the sides for above the shoulders and chin length hair is one of the latest trends in hair. Also, full bangs with an edge with catch some attention this fall.

What is Redux?

The French fashion label notorious for its sky-high prices will release its less expensive clothes range called Redux in October.

Items, designed by the fashion house’s head designer Ricardo Tisci, will comprise a selection of the label’s “greatest hits” (including shoes) starting at US$350 (RM1,225) which is less than Givenchy’s normal runway prices.

Redux was first shown in June and will hit stores twice a year. The debut collection focuses on studs and white blouses, ruffles, and pintucking.

The move makes sense in a strained economy, even though Tisci’s last ready-to-wear collection sold out at many department stores.

The first thing Audrey Tautou does is leap out of her seat and declare: "I love your glasses! I want some. Where did you get them?" At five feet three inches she is petite rather than small, slight as opposed to thin. Excruciatingly gamine, she would make the perfect Peter Pan. Her jet-black hair is cut characteristically short, brushed forward like Audrey Hepburn's in Funny Face, her lips are femme-fatale scarlet, and a white lace blouse perfectly complements old-school Levi's that hang impeccably over a pair of black 1940s-style high heels. Tautou looks immaculately stylish, which must've come in handy for her latest role as the legendary French fashion icon, Coco Chanel, in the hugely successful Gallic period piece, Coco Before Chanel, directed by Anne Fontaine.

"Once Audrey agreed to play Coco I knew I could do the film as I envisioned," said the director just a few minutes before I met Tautou. "I was struck by her will, her audacity, and the density of her gaze that goes straight through you. She has the same impertinent look, the same androgynous appeal, the same toughness and innate sense of style. She is the only person to play Coco."

Undoubtedly, Tautou pulls of the role with uncommon aplomb, delivering a subtle yet multi-layered performance that, with just the arch of a manicured eyebrow, quietly provokes all manner of questions about the icon that some might rather avoid. Did she hate men? Did she use men? Did she sleep her way to success? Did she step on any and all to rise to the top? Or was she purely a product of her environment who had to use all at her disposal to succeed?

And yet the film avoids the most controversial aspects of the pioneering designer's life. Absent is her notorious affair during the war with Hans Gunther von Dincklage, a German officer and Nazi spy, as is her subsequent arrest for war crimes and her acquittal, before trial, via the intervention of the British royal family.

Instead, the film plumps for what is arguably a better story, and deals with Chanel's origins. It begins, like a 19th-century romantic novel, as, Gabrielle "Coco" Bonheur Chanel, born in a poor house on August 19th 1883, is abandoned in the orphanage of the Roman Catholic monastery of Aubazine.

The narrative moves swiftly on to her short career as a bar singer (she took her name from a song she sang in cabaret) and covers her life as kooky concubine to the immensely rich playboy, Etienne Balsan (Benoît Poelvoorde). The film concludes in 1920 after Coco's romance with her financial backer, British millionaire Arthur "Boy" Capel (Alessandro Nivola), ends when he dies in a car crash, leaving her financially free to revolutionise the way women dressed, thought and behaved.

"Premises of projects about Coco Chanel had been submitted to me for several years," explains the bubbly Tautou, now perched on the arm of her chair. "But I did not want to do a biopic, you know – participating in some sort of saga recounting her life from birth to death. Chanel lived for 87 years! We would have fallen into the clichés that have punctuated her path. No, no, no. I was secretly hoping to get an offer to play Coco but with a particular point of view. Because it's her modernity that fascinates me, her spirit, her ambition and the position she gave women."

"Chanel had to fight against conventions then that were so very paralysing for women." continues Tautou, now standing. "So, when Anne Fontaine explained how she intended to treat the subject, I immediately agreed. She wanted to avoid the obvious truisms and some sort of mimetic interpretation of Chanel, and was determined to concern herself solely with her beginning – the period when Coco was building herself and asserting her personality – which for me is the most interesting period in her life."

French Fashion Hermes Increased Sales

Second-quarter sales at the firm's ready-to-wear clothing and fashion accessories division were up 13%, while they rose 11% at its silk and textiles unit.

However, sales of its watches, perfumes, and tableware goods were all down.

Analyst Dennis Weber of Evolution Securities said Hermes was helped by the strength of its brand name.

"Hermes' established brand reputation works in the company's favour in the current environment, and we believe in the relatively defensive nature of the Hermes brand," he said.

The 11% fall in the sale of Hermes' watches between April and June has been echoed by watchmakers in Switzerland, industry figures have shown.

High Fashion Eyebrows

When it comes to eyebrows, high fashion has decided there is only one way to go – and go they must. Emma Watson and Cheryl Cole may adhere to the power of the brow to frame a face, but more and more models are bleaching them to the point of invisibility. The eyebrow, it seems, has become "excess" hair. Agyness Deyn, Lily Donaldson and Linda Evangelista have all gone eyebrowless recently. In Givenchy's latest advertising campaign, eight male and female models recline in a French chateau looking curiously androgenous. Each is eyebrowless.

Perhaps the trend has been a long time coming. Three years ago, the model Lara Stone bleached her brows on the advice of Carine Roitfeld, the esteemed editor of French Vogue. This year she starred at the autumn/ winter and couture shows, appearing on catwalks for Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier and Prada among others. And this month the popular 90s model Kristen McMenamy, now 42, appears on the cover of Italian Vogue without brows, 17 years after she and Karen Elson popularised the look during the grunge years.

Makeup artist Pat McGrath worked on the Balenciaga and Prada shows, both of which featured bleached-out brows. "The current economic troubles open people up to be more daring and willing to don cutting-edge looks," she says.

At a time when advertising is suffering, is eyebrowlessness just a more extreme way for a brand to sell its products? Or perhaps the prevalence of Botox (no frowning or eyebrow raising) means we simply have no need for them?

Aidan Jean-Marie, creative director of Premier Model Management, says he has "had a couple of girls who had their brows bleached for beauty stories in the last few weeks. I think clients like the look because it's clean, like a blank canvas, and 90s-inspired, which is a big trend. It's alien-like and quite creepy."

But before you reach for the Jolene, consider a more subtle take on the look. Lisa Oxenham, beauty and style editor at Marie Claire, advises "gently tweaking eyebrows with bleach". She says it gives the same effect as freckles on blondes. But she warns against eyebrow removal. "Brows give a face expression – when they are not there the look hardens." And "it is not advised if your face is round, long or if you're hungover".

Spotlights lit up the catwalk Wednesday at Jean Paul Gaultier’s haute couture show, steeped in old-fashioned Hollywood glamour and paying tribute to screen sirens like Jane Russell and Ava Gardner.

Gaultier sent out glamazon variations on his signature pieces — trench coats, second-skin dresses with sheer paneling and menswear suits.

A model in a sharp-shouldered pantsuit in black wool was channeling Katherine Hepburn between takes. A gold sequin-covered hourglass halterdress was screaming Jane Russell’s name.

Actor Mickey Rourke said it was a treat to see the kind of Hollywood glamour that “went out the door 30 years ago.”

“They’re making a different kind of movie now, unfortunately,” said Rourke, an ’80s superstar who made his comeback with “The Wrestler.”

Gaultier, the one-time enfant terrible of French fashion, gave some of the looks his signature humorous twist.

Reams of film were wrapped around one model’s shoulders like a shawl. A bodysuit looked like the offspring of a trenchcoat and a swimsuit.

And the bride — the look that traditionally closes the wildly expensive made-to-measure couture shows — was just plain bizarre. In a mini dress made from what looked like plastic bags filled with gold sequins, she wore a veil draped over a cone on top of her head. Black and white close-ups of ’50s-era movie stars were projected onto the veil.

The winter 2010 haute couture shows are over! So here's a final look -- at John Paul Gaultier, Valentino and Josep Font. Jenny Barchfield of the Associated Press reports:

"Jean Paul Gaultier looked to vintage Hollywood for a solid collection that was equal parts Ava Gardner and Gaultier — the one-time enfant terrible of French fashion — himself.

"Things were looking up at Valentino. Its new design duo finally found their way out of the archive and forged a sexy new look for the mythic Italian label. Out went the ladylike day coats and tasteful A-line cocktail dresses in jewel-toned duchess silk; in came the second-skin bodice dresses in flesh-colored tulle and black lace; and up, way up, went the hemlines.

"For his fourth couture display, Spanish designer Josep Font continued to shore up his avant-garde credentials with a ravishing collection of think pieces."

At Valentino, Barchfield, writes, "the new design team aimed to seduce a younger, hipper clientele with a racy tulle and lace collection [check out the model at right] that projected the Valentino woman out of the past and into fashion’s future." She continues:

Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli — who last year replaced Valentino’s successor just two seasons after the maestro retired — had been stuck in the label’s archives. For their first two collections at the helm of the house, they delivered up couture and pret-a-porter collections that were "more Valentino than Valentino," full of gorgeous-but-dated coats and dresses embellished with oversized bows and roses.

This time around, however, they swapped stateliness for sexiness, delivering bustiers in nude tulle with panels of black peek-a-boo lace and thigh-skimming skirts.

As for Josep Font, Barchfield proclaimed the Spanish designer "crazy" and, possibly, "brilliant."

"Font pushes haute couture — that anything-goes laboratory of fashion — to its avant-garde extreme.

Models in his show Wednesday could barely walk — and it wasn’t on account of the vertiginous heels, as it is on many catwalks. Enveloped in a small mountain of mohair shag — a funnel-shaped coat — or swathed in endless in yards (meters) of featherlight chiffon — an embroidered tunic dress — and with pointy plastic collages balanced on their heads, the models did a strange geriatric shuffle around the catwalk."

Indeed, some of Font's creations [that's one of his at left] look like illustrations from a modern version of "Through the Looking-Glass." We could envision a slimmer version of the Red Queen mincing "about in a white cocktail dress with a single red sleeve with an enormous puff that in profile resembled an oversized Sacred Heart" (to quote Barchfield).

Megan Fox was the star attraction at Giorgio Armani's Paris fashion show

The 'Transformers' beauty looked stunning in an Armani asymmetrical knee-length dress, with her long dark locks tumbling over her shoulders, as she joined Cate Blancett in the front row of the designer's catwalk show at the French city's Couture Fashion Week.

While Megan wore a simple dress, the show's models showcased new designs which wore covered in dazzling beadwork and sequins.

Admitting the collection could be hard to wear, Megan said: "I don't know if I could pull it off, but I could try."

Cate Blanchett, who was dressed on an Armani pagoda-shouldered sheath dress, was also impressed by the collection.

The Oscar-winning beauty said: "It's blinding, it's beautiful, really beautiful."

Armani's winter 2010 display featured his signature look of pantsuits, complete with rhinestone-hemmed cuffs and buttons, and a series of bustier dresses, covered in crystals and sequins.

Following the show, held at the Palais de Chaillot, Armani hosted a champagne reception in the Musee de l'Homme, next door, to launch his newest fragrance, l'Idole.

Other designers to showcase their new range at Paris Fashion Week included Christian Lacroix and Givenchy.

Stephane Rolland - Futuristic Retro Collection

Not every designer can draw inspiration for a lush haute couture collection from wallpaper, but that's just where Stephane Rolland looked for his winter 2010 display.

"There was this amazing wall-covering at this apartment in New York, really elaborate and full of tubing," said the French designer in a pre-show interview with The Associated Press. "I wanted to recreate those walls."

Upon that unusual foundation, Rolland built a graphic, geometric collection that evoked Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, drained of his signature bright primary colors.

Elaborate mosaics made of fabric-wrapped plastic tubes, like bits of a plastic straws, hung from the hems of abbreviated cocktail dresses in gray and camel cashmere. Gowns of sheer silk were covered in leather lozenge-shaped appliques, like the scales of a giant lizard.

The dresses, with their powerful shoulders, dipping backs and irregular, rounded cutouts, had a retro-futuristic feel about them -- as if Rolland was channeling the Space Age as imagined in 1973.

"There's something architectural, something sculptural, something geometric and beautiful" about the collection, said French actress Emmanuelle Beart, from her front-row perch. "(He) is someone who's got a real vision, something that's unique and out-of-the-ordinary."

Rolland, a favorite of Middle Eastern royals, banked on the presence of some of his ultra-weathy couture clients to launch a wildly expensive line of custom handbags with 22-karat gold metalwork and diamond-encrusted closures.

The bags, a day purse and an evening clutch made by an exclusive French leatherwear atelier, start at euro10,000 ($NZ22,675) and go way up from there, depending on the client's specifications.

When asked how much a clutch that scintillated with 2,500 diamonds would fetch, Rolland stayed mum, raising his eyebrows enigmatically.

Coco avant Chanel is the story of the young Coco and the path that led her to become a designer. She's played by French actress Audrey Tautou who described the designer saying” “she had a lot of look and talent taste and this look and observation. That was her genius.

“She was such a brilliant woman she was a genius. Everything she did, everything she built is still actual and modern because she was a unique woman.”

Coco never married but was rumoured to have had many affairs.

The film centres around significant relationships Coco had with two men. Rich playboy lover Benoît Poelvoorde - who introduced her to her future clientele. And her great love, Boy Capel who also financed Coco’s first boutique.

It was a tough role for American actor Allesandro Nivola - who plays an Englisman that speaks in French throughout the film - he only had a basic grasp of the language when he got the role.

Nivola said “it was completely exhausting and nerve wracking not to mention that I needed to learn to play polo, and play piano and waltz and…”

Audrey Tautou has had the seal of approval from current Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld for her portrayal of Coco. While director Anne Fontaine says the film couldn’t have gone ahead without her in the starring role.

“Physically she is incredibly close to Gabrielle Chanel. It’s incredible when I met Audrey, in 4 or 5 minutes I thought it’s incredible she's there in front of me.”

Tautou said “to play her how we know her like at the end of the movie is not that difficult because you have all the books videos and pictures, witnesses to play her before that it's more unknown world so it's more difficult to propose a character who has the potential to become the person that everyone knows.”

Like Chanel, Audrey Tautou is famed for her elegance and delicate beauty and while it was masculine tailoring that impressed Chanel, it’s masculine pastimes that Tautou loves, especially rugby and the All Blacks.

“Yes of course they are very impressive and I like when they lose to France! No one will come to my movie after this sentence!”

Paris Men Fashion Week: Issey Miyake

Color took center-stage at the Paris-based Japanese label Issey Miyake, as designer Dai Fujiwara sent out Turkish-inspired harem pants and short suits in turquoise, Ceylon and Persian blues embellished with geometric mosaic designs and eye-popping tulip print.

A crocheted hat resembled a turban, while tapered mules conjured up a sultan's slippers. The blue, red and purple squares, triangles and hexagons woven into a cotton fabric turned a generously cut summer jacket into a delicate mosaic.

"Turkey used to be a meeting place between East and West which is the same concept behind Miyake," Fujiwara told The AP in a pre-show interview. "I took a very historical Turkish look and mixed it with the kind of clothes young people around the world are wearing."

Other highlights included a cardigan in canary yellow and bubblegum pink made entirely from crocheted Japanese paper. A spokesman for the label acknowledged the show-stopping piece had one drawback: being "not that easy to wash."

The German suitmaker also sent out a collection fit for the beaches of the chic French beach resort of Deauville. Belgian-born designer Bruno Pieters stuck to a navy white-and-red palette and lots of horizontal sailors' shirt stripes, pairing tunic-length shirts in sheer cotton with short shorts and cropped jackets cut even shorter in the back.

One model carrying a leather tote and decked out in red shorts and an abbreviated double-breasted jacket embellished with buttons looked like a bell boy straight out of a a five-star Deauville hotel.

Other models looked more like the fish one might catch on Deauville's beaches. Heavy metal sequins covering several well-cut jackets sparkled like scales.

The looks were eye-catching, but gave even style maverick Adrian Brody pause.

Asked whether he would dare don such a sparkly garment, the American actor demurred. "I could maybe wear them for something specific, but casually? I think I don't know."

Menswear designer Paul Helvers paid homage to the bike messenger, sending out models in generously cut single-button jackets and cuffed shorts toting across-the-chest messenger bags in nubby leather.

Models in dress shoes with heels capped in fluorescent rubber trod across a catwalk covered in black gravel that sparkled like asphalt.

"This season I was really into pushing the boundaries of what is sportswear and what is elegance, what is chic," Helvers told The Associated Press in a backstage interview.

The impeccably cut suits had sportswear touches like zippered hoodies and ventilation flaps. Often the suits, in eye-popping oranges and yellows or muted moss and mauve tones, were topped with flowing microfiber windbreakers or light trenches.

Models wore plastic sunglasses with yellow-glazed lenses and jewelry meant to resemble bicycle chains.

Paris - French label Thierry Mugler was channelling Miami Vice with a vibrant, '80's-inspired show on Friday aimed at men with attitude enough to wear pink.

Designer Rosemary Rodriguez delivered what she called a "bad boy in pastel colours", serving up slim, lightweight pantsuits in citron, lime and bubblegum shades for the label's spring-summer 2010 collection.

"It's about classics with a twist, preppy basics with pimpy touch, Miami Vice with an edge," she said in a pre-show interview.

Rodriguez, who was presenting her third menswear show for Mugler, paired sheer dress shirts in pastel polka dots with mix-matched linen and cotton separates. All looked crisp and eminently wearable.

Rodriguez's Mugler man was also sporty, clomping down the catwalk in oversized white basketball shoes with extra-tall tongues embellished with the brand's star logo.

Mugler, a mythic name in the 1980s, has struggled to find its footing since the departure of its founder and the subsequent closure and re-launch of the label.

The brand's managing director, Juan Penuela Vallejos, said he was confident in Mugler's ability to rise from the ashes - even given the current dismal outlook for retail fashion.

"The brand is coming back, slowly but surely," he said in a pre-show interview.

YSL Short Film for Paris Men Show

Stefano Pilati, the Yves Saint Laurent designer, usually eases us into Paris men’s fashion week with a quiet presentation and a short film. This time around, the latter was courtesy of the filmmaker Samuel Benchetrit, who directed his 11-year-old son, Jules, in an idiosyncratic, eight-minute black and white film. The on-screen style pointers were subtle: always stay young at heart, and push up your sleeves if you’re wearing a blazer. But even without the fashion component, the film — about an inquisitive young boy who finds himself in a suite at the Bristol Hotel after finding the keys on the sidewalk — stands on its own; and, we’re definitely predicting a bright acting future for young Jules.

Milan Fashion Week has kicked off with the boys leading the way. The men’s pret-a-porter shows included Gucci designer Frida Gianni who used white to express a feeling of optimism. At Georgio Armani however, his famed elegance,classic styling and sheer good tailoring were to the fore. The designer received an extra warm welcome having missed several recent personal appearances due to ill health.

Christian Lacroix Speaks Up

"What really hurts," says Christian Lacroix slowly, "is that my name, which I have now lost, is the name of my family. Whoever does take over the business can use it and abuse it as they like, but it's my father's name, and my grandfather's name – men who brought me up to have a very rigid moral backbone; men who taught me never to have any debts."

Were his father alive today, the 58-year-old designer admits, he would be agonised to learn that his son's celebrated couture house – currently owned by the US-based Falic Group – went into voluntary receivership last week as a consequence of 10 million euro losses. And with 125 jobs at stake (including Lacroix's) unless a new investor is found in the next fortnight, the future looks bleak for the many workers who have stayed loyal to Lacroix since the company started trading 22 years ago.

"I'm fighting," he smiles, setting off those Machiavellian eyebrows. "Don't tell anyone, because I'm not allowed to do this, but we absolutely are going to have a show in mid-July, during Fashion Week – and it won't be a funeral: it'll be a fightback." That there is not enough money to pay the seamstresses, fabric suppliers, models or even the stationers printing the invitations is something Lacroix is striving to overcome. "It can't cost us a single euro to put this show on, because I'm not having my workers lose a penny from their pockets, but so far, it looks like thanks to other people's kindness – friends and suppliers working for free – it might happen.

"I can't stand the idea that people think I am to blame," he adds, despondent for a moment. "But to a certain extent I am paying for not having done what everyone else did, with their logos and It-bags. I never went down that route."

Sitting in his fuchsia-painted couture studio above a quiet courtyard off the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, in jeans and one of his own tricolour jackets worn over a pig-motif Comme des Garçons jumper, Lacroix looks anything but defeated. There is, however, an element of tempered hysteria to his defiance, a yearning for levity in his frequent, gurgling fits of laughter.

"The recession was a gift to the management, really, because they could blame everything on that, but it was only partly responsible. Do you know that I haven't been paid for a year and a half?"

This sets him off again. "I'm owed one million two hundred thousand euros." Has he shed a tear, I ask? He rattles off a quick succession of Gallic tuts. "No, no, no: I am too angry to cry."

These statements – as theatrical as the taffeta, lace and embroidered creations hanging behind him – are part of the reason why Lacroix quickly became a part of modern fashion folklore. Who else would, in laughable fashionese during one Nineties catwalk show, describe a garment as "a 'cold-dawn' shot razimir spiral sheath dress with 'apricot' and 'melon' kick pleat"?

To many, I tell him, haute couture is so baffling that they consider it natural it should lose its place in today's world. "But fashion isn't something dead," he says. "Fashion needs to be worn. People are wrong when they see it as being disconnected from reality: every morning, before I sit down to draw, I read all the papers, listen to the radio and find out what is going on in Iran – all that influences me. Besides, in periods of crisis, people need to see beautiful things around them."

As a child growing up in Arles to an engineer father and a fashion-loving mother ("Even as the sirens went off during the blitz, she would put on her best shoes"), Lacroix remembers being intoxicated by the coquetries of women. "My mother and her friends would wear these wonderful big 1950s puffball skirts and I would crawl around underneath them, breathing in their strong perfumes."

After a history of art degree taken largely "to reassure his parents", Lacroix moved to Paris where he dreamt of working as a curator in the Louvre. It wasn't until a few years later, after a spell at Hermès, that – influenced by the gipsy and Provencal traditions he grew up with – Lacroix started designing the opulent corseted and crinolined dresses that were to make him famous.

"My extended family were very embarrassed," he giggles. " 'Why don't you make things like Yves Saint Laurent?' they'd ask. 'Because my name is Christian Lacroix,' I told them."

These baroque tendencies meant that Lacroix was soon designing costumes for the theatre, ballet and opera, and accruing a celebrity clientele. Madonna, Nicole Kidman and the Princess of Wales, with whom he became close, were dedicated admirers of his.

"I still have all Diana's letters," he smiles. "And they tell me what I could see for myself during all the years that I knew her: that she was morphing from a blushing, shy girl into a woman."

At that time, a running joke in the TV series, Absolutely Fabulous, was helping to make him a household name in Britain. "It was the best introduction I could have had in England," he says, "where you guys all think French designers are brainless frogs."

It's a stereotype that Lacroix is far from realising. Throughout the interview his opinionated outbursts are peppered with cultural references and lightened by a rare, very un-French ability to send himself up. He is surprisingly optimistic about the effects the recession will have on his industry ("If you look back at the history of creativity in clothes – the French Revolution, the First World War and the Second World War – they have all been creative reinventions, the moment new forms of luxury come into play") and loves the British for being "stylistically free; not bound up like we are", but is saddened by the new puritanism he sees in young people "which makes me feel like an old pervert".

Today's size zero culture, which recently provoked Alexandra Shulman, the editor of British Vogue, to send a letter to all major designers asking them to make larger sizes, is another cause for concern. "She was right to do that. Very skinny women don't look beautiful in clothes. What I cannot stomach, because it evokes the war to me, is when you can see a woman's kneecap protruding in its entirety, skinny elbows, or a woman's chest bones. I won't tell you who they are because it would be hurtful, but there are certain models I cancelled jobs with because they were too thin. It's a terribly sad cloning of young women today which actually means that there is no room for anything to stand out – except bones."

As a "Mediterranean lover of women", Lacroix feels that the primary female attraction is their capacity to seduce. "That said, I've always been bisexual," he volunteers. "But I could never live with a man – too similar." Off goes that great runaway laugh again, the kind of laugh that would have been cut short by a parent as a child. "And my wife, whom I married in 1974, still fascinates me, still touches me, still makes me want to weep with joy in the mornings. She makes me laugh, I think she's beautiful, she's like my child and my lover – all at once."

As he walks me out, confiding a propos of nothing that he has given up chocolate and Bordeaux, he has an epiphany. "Actually losing a few pounds and having this battle to fight makes me feel that I am undergoing a renaissance," he declares.

I quote a line from a – perhaps premature – fashion obituary in a British paper last week, intrigued to know what he makes of it. The worry is that "there just aren't enough Beluga-eating, stunningly beautiful, moneyed women in this world to keep Christian Lacroix's fantasy alive."

"Probably true," he deadpans. Then bursts out laughing.

Catwalk sample size items are rarely understood outside the world of fashion. Partly because they are an average two to four in British sizing and not many of us would be able to squeeze into them.

Fitted directly on to models who are chosen by the designers or casting scouts, they are generally slimmer — and younger — than those featured in glossy fashion magazines.

This is partly because designers believe that slimmer frames show off their clothes in a better light and make a bigger impact when the catwalk images are reproduced.

Another reason is that less established designers are also limited to the models they can use.

Without the production budgets of the big labels they are restricted to less experienced girls or what is known in the industry as “new faces”. These younger girls, often in their early teens, are not physically fully developed.

While brands such as Dior, Prada and Armani can afford to make several different sample collections, up-and-coming designers can produce only one — which is shown on the catwalk.

And this is where sizing issues occur. Unlike newspapers, which work to short lead times and can shoot clothes in larger sizes from the boutiques, magazines shoot with a three or four-month lead time and are restricted to using the catwalk samples as the designs have yet to go into production.

Magazines also have to dress celebrities who may be a healthy size ten but are nothing like the “size ten” samples the designers send in.

It is also frustrating for fashion publications as they have a responsibility to uphold to their readers. Not only must they be careful to use models with attainable bodies but they need “to sell” what the model is wearing. This is why some magazines alter the finished images to make the models look a little fuller in the figure.

With the current trend for reinventing supermodels or using older models, designers may well have to rethink how they go about sizing their collections.

The luxury-goods sector is going out of fashion. Aquascutum, whose customers included Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, has threatened mass redundancies just days after renowned French fashion house Christian Lacroix went into administration. Yet the luxury-goods sector continues to trade at a glitzy premium to the wider market.

In the past that premium reflected an assumption the sector's super-rich target customers would be immune to an economic downturn. But this recession has proved that theory wrong. Sales are falling across the sector as even big spenders have cut back, influenced as much by the idea it's no longer fashionable to flaunt wealth as by waning incomes.

Yet since the stock market rally began in March, luxury goods have outperformed the wider market despite a raft of bad news and no sign that extravagant spending is back in vogue. While the larger groups with diversified products, such as LVMH and PPR, are better placed to weather the downturn than individual fashion houses such as Lacroix, their premiums are nonetheless starting to look overdone.

A few months ago Burberry traded at a 10% premium to the European market, now that's more than doubled to 25% while LVMH now trades at a 33% premium to the market compared to 27% at the end of March. Even the premiums of those companies, such as PPR, which trades below Burberry and LVMH due to its less iconic brands, have risen. But trading conditions have shown no signs of improvement.

Granted the demise of Lacroix doesn't come as a huge surprise. The designer never turned a profit in 22 years as his flamboyant haute couture struggled to make the transition to ready-to-wear collections. But it was the decision by major stockists such as Saks and Neiman Marcus to reduce orders for the fall collection that was the final straw.

As the top-end department stores struggle, they are likely to cut back still further on orders which will hit the whole sector. In that context, the trading multiples of the luxury-goods sector are starting to look as highly priced as the haute couture they represent.

Lagerfeld, head designer at French fashion brand Chanel, will feature as bad guy Fabu in the animated action film based on the long-running hit TV series about three high school girls who become secret agents, producer Marathon Media said on Wednesday.

The movie will open in France in July..

The French label will host their show inside the iconic Dior salon at 30 Avenue Montaigne in a bid to return to its brand heritage and history, reports Elle.

Sidney Toledano from Dior told WWD: "I want to do it in this house again to feel at Dior. We really want to transport the spirit."

French Fashion House Lacroix Wants To Fight Back

Paris - French fashion king Christian Lacroix has pledged to fight to the hilt to maintain his prestigious couture house, declared insolvent this week after falling foul of the global crisis.

In a letter penned by Lacroix to the firm`s 125 staff that was read to AFP by a company source on Friday, the designer said:

"I don`t know what tomorrow will be made of, if indeed there is a tomorrow, but I will do everything to ensure we remain a couture house 200 percent, and to safeguard a knowhow without which the lungs and heart of this house would not exist."

He said he had been designing for free for the last months and that Christian Lacroix SNC owed him 1.2 million euros.

He also slammed the "shareholders` strange management," later in the note dubbing it "catastrophic."

Acquired from the world`s leading luxury giant LVMH in 2005 by US duty free giant Falic, Christian Lacroix SNC said in a statement Thursday that it had declared insolvency before a Paris court due to "the sharp downturn of the luxury market."

The company "has filed a voluntary petition with the Tribunal de Commerce de Paris to put itself under the protection of the courts" but intends "to present a continuation plan" and "to maintain its business operations throughout the proceedings."

Declaring insolvency is a first step towards bankruptcy protection.

A company spokesperson said the court would hand down a decision within a week. Lacroix, 58, was unavailable for comment.

Celebrated for his exuberant swathes of lace and embroidery, and patchworks of fabrics in vibrant colours, Lacroix hit the catwalks over 20 years ago with dramatic designs inspired by the costumes of his native Arles in the south of France, and the Camargue, with its gypsies and bullfighters.

But sales have failed to match the excitement generated by each of his collections and Thursday`s announcement is a strong setback for the couture house.

After the 2005 buy-out, the company launched "an ambitious and costly restructuring plan to reposition the brand offering to higher end collections," including the opening of two US stores, one in Las Vegas, one in New York.

"Unfortunately, this longterm strategy for repositioning of the brand was dramatically hindered by the current and ongoing world financial and economic crisis which severely hit the luxury sector," the company said.

Scarves. After a little more than a month in Paris, I now know why French women are known for their scarves. One might even say that it is an unwritten rule of Paris to wear a scarf with every outfit, no matter the season. Though we have almost shed all of our winter wear, I encourage everyone to hold on to the scarf. Granted, in 80° weather, an extra layer of heavy wool is hardly spring fashion, but light fabrics can be just as much a part of spring as a pair of gladiator sandals. To stay classic, a small printed silk-like scarf tied in a triangle around the neck, or simply knotted into a big loop like a loose necklace can add a great touch to any outfit. The other option is to wrap a big linen scarf like a cuff around the neck. These linen or pashmina type scarves can be worn in soft greys and browns, but if the scarf recently designed for Louis Vuitton’s Stephen Sprouse Spring 2009 collection in hot pink linen with pop-art rose print is any indication, scarves of bright colors and light-weight fabrics are perfectly acceptable for spring weather.

Hot Pink. With Louis Vuitton’s scarf also comes this season’s theme color: hot pink. If it is any sign of this bold hue’s popularity, hot pink has made its mark on the Spring 2009 runways of designers like Marc Jacobs, Badgley Mischka, and Matthew Williamson. Williamson, most recently acclaimed for the H&M collaboration that flew out of his stores April 23, outfitted Heidi Klum in a hot pink satin suit for the season finale of Project Runway. One piece in a bright shade of pink is enough to make your outfit stand out – neon-pink flats are the ‘must-have’ here in Paris.

A good closet needs basics, but once the essentials have been assembled, it is time to look for the accents. Have fun experimenting with bright colors, patterns, fabrics, and bold accessories; as long as the rest of your outfit is basic enough, the possibilities are endless and few pieces are too bold.

French Fashion House Lacroix In Trouble!

The French fashion house of Christian Lacroix, considered one of the country's most creative contemporary designers, is near bankruptcy, the daily Le Figaro reported Thursday. Management of the fashion house said last Friday the business could no longer pay its bills, according to Le Figaro. A commercial court is to decide next week whether to declare the company bankrupt and liquidate it to pay off its debts. However, shareholders have said they want to keep the fashion house afloat and will present a rescue plan to the court. Like many luxury goods businesses, the Lacroix fashion house was severely affected by the recession, losing 10 million euros in 2008 on turnover of 30 million euros. And business was even worse this year. Sales of Lacroix's ready-to-wear summer collection for women are down 35 per cent. It remains unclear if the next scheduled ready-to-wear fashion show, set for July, will be held. Company head Nicolas Topiol said the company was particularly suffering from the downturn in the United States and Japan, its two most important markets. Despite reaping lavish praise for Lacroix's opulent and theatrical creations, the business never made money in its 32-year-history. That is why French luxury group LVMHsold it in 2005 to the Falic Group, the second-largest US duty-free retailer. The new owners invested heavily in the couture business, running up its debt. Lacroix, 58, who designed the wedding dress of singer Christina Aguilera, is contractually obligated to continue working for the label that bears his name until next year.

The young designers selected in the “Espoir mode” competition are Andra Clitan from Bucharest, Popoviciu Laura from Oradea, Istvan Cimpan from Cluj and Anca Ioana Petrea from Braila. The Four designers were selected by a jury of French and Romanian fashion experts, presided by Doina Levintza, and are considered as representative for the young Romanian fashion. They will be granted a chance to exhibit their collections to the French Institute of Bucharest, and the creations of the artist who will win the final stage of the competition will be exhibited and promoted by the new residence of the French Fashion Institute in Paris during the Fashion Week of March 2010.

Not only young designers will exhibit their works during the festival, but also consecrated names of fashion. Richard Rene, the French designer invited to this edition of the festival, will present a haute – couture collection in Bucharest, as a preview to the presentation in Paris. Richard Rene has worked as an assistant for the famous Jean – Paul Gaultier.

The fashion fair at the French Institute will host creations by 30 young Romanian designers.

The French Institute will also host the broadcast of a documentary that presents a work day in the workshop of the famous designer Yves Saint Laurent and the film “Coco Avant Chanel,” starring Audrey Tautou.

With 150 stores in France, the network Sergent Major continues its development in Serbia with a new opening in Belgrade. Sergent Major opened its doors on May 23, Bulevar Kralja Aleksandra 94. Serbian Delta Fashion company is representing the brand Sergent Major in Serbia and also in Montenegro. The first Sergent Major shop in Montenegro will be opened in Podgorica, within the Delta City Shopping mall.

It seems that more international retail brands are realizing that they can win a lot in the Serbian market. French Fashion House Yves Saint Laurent announced that a limited edition collection of tee-shirts and tote bags has been developed in organic cotton in recognition of the PPR group’s HOME film project. The collection will debut in selected Yves Saint Laurent flagship boutiques exclusively in early June 2009.

The film HOME is a hymn to the Earth, an appeal for people to act intelligently and to better work out, analyze and understand our common history. HOME is a succession of aerial images that have been filmed in more than fifty countries around the world accompanied by a voice-over offering constructive hindsight into major environmental and social challenges facing our world. Directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand and produced by Luc Besson (Elzévir Films and EuropaCorp), the film will be released worldwide on June 5, 2009 – World Environment Day – in cinemas, on television, DVD and the Internet. The aim of this simultaneous global broadcast is to enable as many people as possible to watch the film together. One of the most prominent fashion designers for Chanel decided to delay the show because he wanted to wait for the sunset, to make the experience better.

Any way you look at it, it seems that Karl has gotten used to being late for events. He was two hours late to a dinner made in his honour only a night earlier, only to be awarded by ovations for his efforts.

Obviously, fashion lovers are able to forgive everything. According to some claims, some editors remained standing, despite high heels, only to be present at the show.

So the show was perfect in the end. All of the creations were worn by Marchesa Casat. It was a spectacular show.

Cabaret Chic On The Roll

Ever since Liza Minnelli sang and danced through Bob Fosse's 1972 movie Cabaret, fashion designers have regularly channelled their inner Sally Bowles.

And now the fashion sorority is again turning to the fishnet-clad cabaret singer for inspiration. Not only is tuxedo-dressing back in the spotlight, so too are flapper dresses, sequins, white shirts, tailored micro shorts, hot pants, bows and feathers.

Given the array of vaudeville-inspired garments on the racks, it is hardly surprising we are mixing our white shirts with our bow ties, tiny shorts and fishnets, and our tuxedo jackets with our sequined skirts and dresses.

In fact, the current cabaret looks merge the androgynous Emcee - all top hats, tails and heavy make-up - and the seductive Sally Bowles - in suspenders, eyelashes to-die-for, and that black bowler.

All this divine decadence was highlighted in a knock-out beauty spread in the June issue of UK Vogue. Featuring Canadian model Jessica Stam and shot by photographer Patrick Demarchelier, it showcased eyes that shimmered and sparkled in silver and gold, sequinned shorts, hot pants, feathered capes, stay-ups, bowler hats, and glitter shoes.

It is not surprising that Cabaret's style has infiltrated UK collections, given that John Kander and Fred Ebb's hit musical has been revived in the West End. But the steamy costumes of the Kit Kat Klub are also inspiring local designers.

Whatever the reason for the current fashion Zeitgeist, there is no denying its cabaret roots. Sydney label Ksubi has credited French cabaret singers among the inspirations for its latest collection of sexy, structural swimwear and corsets, fashioned from lace and leopard prints.

New Zealand label Sylvester - all ruffled knickers, tuxedo jackets, fishnets and bowler hats - has also taken its cues from cabaret stars of bygone eras.

Meanwhile, Sydney labels Milk & Honey and This is Genevieve have also channelled a kind of fashion hybrid of Emcee and Sally Bowles - all top hats, canes, sequins, and dancing shoes.

Kate Winslet is to front new campaigns with Lancome.

The 'Revolutionary Road' actress - who has been working with the French beauty brand since 2007 - will star in advertisements for two new ranges, Renergie skin care and L'Absolu Rouge make-up, from July.

No further details of the campaigns have been released, including who will shoot the new adverts.

Meanwhile, Coty Inc - who produce perfumes for supermodel Kate Moss and 'Sex and the City' actress Sarah Jessica Parker - have announced they will be producing a new fragrance for designer Jil Sander, called 'Jil'.

Julia Restoin Roitfeld, the daughter of French Vogue director Carine Roitfeld, will be the face of the new product which will be available from August.

Photographer Jan Welters will be behind the campaign.

Jil recently announced she is to become creative director of Japanese retailer Uniqlo, marking her return to the fashion industry.

The German designer had previously not worked in fashion since 2004, when she left her eponymous label - which the Prada Group bought 75 per cent of in 1999 - following a disagreement with Prada CEO Patrizio Bertelli.

LVMH Talks About Edun

Paris - LVMH is to take a minority stake in Edun, the ecological and ethical fashion start-up founded by Irish singer Bono and his lovely wife, the world's biggest luxury group said last Thursday.

Launched in 2005, Edun aims to promote sustainable development and fair trading by selling T-shirts and dresses in organic cotton made in countries such as India, Peru, Uganda, Kenya and Lesotho.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

"We are proud to contribute to the operational development of Edun and to the improvement of living standards of local communities," LVMH Chief Executive Bernard Arnault said in a statement.

The French group's other fashion brands include Celine, Kenzo, Donna Karan and Louis Vuitton.

Bono, whose real name is Paul Hewson, is the lead singer of rock band U2 and an active humanitarian campaigner, nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

"With LVMH, we can step up (Edun's) development, giving greater stability to our suppliers and the local communities they support," Bono said in LVMH's statement.

Edun will maintain its headquarters in Dublin and a subsidiary in New York. Mark Weber, head of Donna Karan International, will supervise LVMH's investment for the French luxury group.

As he announced the Edun deal, Arnault said trading in April was broadly in line with the level seen during the first quarter, with a slight improvement in wines and spirits.

Asked about the group's operations overall, Arnault told Reuters: "It is in line with the first quarter."

Jean-Jacques Guiony, LVMH Finance Director, later told Reuters there had been a slight improvement in wines and spirits particularly in Cognac sales, which made up about half of the unit's sales.

But conclusions could not be drawn based on one month's trading, he added.

Moet Hennessy, LVMH's wines and spirit unit, saw revenue drop 22 percent in the first quarter on a like-for-like basis.

Hennessy volumes alone were down 21 percent.

Arnault added that Diageo, which still owns 34 percent of Moet Hennessy, was not planning to sell its stake.

"To my knowledge, our partner is not looking to sell its stake, so the question is not on the agenda," he said.

Last month, LVMH denied it was in talks to sell control of Moet Hennessy to Diageo, attempting to quash market rumors the two groups were preparing a deal. Industry observers at the time said they believed Diageo appeared more keen on fully owning Moet Hennessy than LVMH was on selling.

Citing analysts who expect to see green shoots of recovery next year, Arnault forecast market conditions would improve faster in the United States than in Europe.

"The economy will have to pick up again," Arnault said.]

The festival opened today (May 12), with Disney/Pixar's 3D movie “UP” leading off the show. Rob will be taking in the scene for the first time as a major star in his own right. But this year’s festival is likely to be somewhat more subdued.

While some regular showbiz parties have been cancelled, the fashion brands such as Dolce & Gabbana, Chopard (as co-sponsors) and D Squared will be hosting events on or just off the Croisette, the vacation Mecca’s main promenade.

Rob, who by now is familiar with major red carpet events – he attended the Oscars for the first time this year as well – will rub shoulders with the likes of former President Bill Clinton and Pop diva Mariah Carey, who will be there to promote “Precious,” her new film.

Regulars like Sharon Stone, Donatella Versace and movie executive Harvey Weinstein will also be town, where many deals get made

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will be among stars to watch. Brad will be there to promote Quentin Tarantino's World War II drama "Inglourious Basterds." Brad is starring in the film, one of 20 in the main competition for the coveted Palme d'Or, given for best picture.

Academy Award-winner Penélope Cruz, who appears in the movie “Broken Embraces,” will also be there. Now she’s Rob’s type. The film is directed by Pedro Almodovar and will be competing for the grand prize.

Actress Robin Wright Penn, a member of this year’s jury panel, will be making her first public appearance since breaking up with her estranged husband Sean Penn, who judged the competition last year.

Rob is expected to spend some time helping to shop a new film called "Remember Me," directed by Allen Coulter and produced by Nick Osborne and Trevor Engelson.

The film will be presented to a number of buyers at the festival, along with three other titles from Summit Entertainment, which produced “Twilight.”

Shooting will begin this summer in New York. Pattinson will take a break from the shooting "New Moon" and "Eclipse" to make the picture. "New Moon" wraps shooting in May while "Eclipse" begins in August.

For the warmer weather, Swennen likes aqua, yellow or silver shoes worn with black, or darker hues paired with crisp white or sandy beige clothes.

The silhouette works with knee-length skirts, Bermuda shorts and both wide- and skinny-leg pants, according to Swennen, but stay away from short shorts or maxi dresses — the proportions just aren’t right.

"When I see other women carrying a Birkin in a color that I want, I get bag envy," says the 32-year-old chief executive of luxury retail Web site savoir-faire.com. "The more you can't have something, the more you want it."

The French fashion house, which was founded in 1837 as a saddle maker, has eschewed many of the strategies followed by others in the industry.

While bigger designer brands such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Armani have pursued fast growth, expanding rapidly in emerging markets and reaching out to a younger, hipper clientele with trendy products and advertising, Hermès has taken a sleepier approach to the business -- even in times of economic prosperity.

Hermès also keeps tight control over its retail outlets and rewards loyal clients with private parties, tickets to horse races and yoga sessions.

"We are not fashionable, and we avoid being fashionable, We didn't want to make the brand too accessible. Suddenly Hermès bags were being associated with canvas, which is not what we wanted," says Mr. Thomas.

Chanel No 5 Anniversary

Last tuesday (May 5), commemorate the anniversary of the debut of its legendary No 5 perfume on May 5, 1921.

Along with new ads, the main item in the current effort is a short Internet film starring French actress Audrey Tautou, which is directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. The movie “Train de Nuit,” depicts a brief encounter between a man and a woman traveling to Istanbul on an Orient Express train.

Tautou follows in the footsteps of cinematic muses like Nicole Kidman, Ali McGraw, Carole Bouquet, Lauren Hutton and Catherine Deneuve who have served as spokeswomen for the brand.

“For me, a woman who wears perfume represents the ultimate in femininity,” Tautou said in a statement. “When a woman has a pleasant or mysterious scent, it adds a little something to her.”

Clips from the film will be used in Chanel print and TV advertising, featuring Tautou. Chanel handles its ads in-house.

In 1921, fashion designer Coco Chanel commissioned perfumer Ernest Beaux to create a new fragrance. Reportedly, five was Chanel’s lucky number, and after five tries, and on the fifth day of May, the fifth month of the year, she was presented with the scent. Or so Chanel’s history says.

Department store Saks Fifth Avenue in New York will partner with Chanel in promoting the brand. Chanel and Saks have created a new arts program at a city school, P.S. 5 (Ellen Lurie Elementary School), which will receive special funding for after-school art classes, supplies and trips.

Chanel will take over Saks’ flagship Fifth Avenue store through May 10 and a portion of Fifth Avenue will be renamed “Avenue No 5.” Seventeen window dressings inspired by the “Train de Nuit” film will feature selections from the brand’s ready-to-wear collection. Indoors, the main floor will have prominent No 5 displays, as well as other locations throughout the store.

French Fashion Designer, Hospitalized?

Paris - French fashion designer Pierre Cardin has been hospitalized with an undiagnosed ailment after falling ill at his home in the southern village of Lacoste, the daily La Provence reported Wednesday.

The 86-year-old designer was taken to a hospital in the city of Marseille by a chopper, for such reason of security purposes rather than the gravity of the illness.

It is the second time in less than a week that Cardin has been in hospital. He was briefly hospitalized at the end of last week after breaking his shoulder blade in a fall at his home.

Considered one of the primary designers of the 20th century corp., Cardin counted former American first lady Jacqueline Kennedy and the Beatles among his clients.

In the catalogue for The Model As Muse, an exhibition opening tomorrow in New York , there's a little story that summarizes the way modelling used to be.

It's a slight but chilling tale from 1920 that recalls the Paris couturier Paul Poiret at one of his presentations saying to a journalist, "Do not speak to the girls, they are not there."

That changed in a dazzling manner in 1983 when designer Karl Lagerfeld hired Inès de la Fressange to personify the image of Chanel. Proving to be the spokesperson who roared, de la Fressange possessed more than Audrey Hepburn brows, nut-brown eyes, a boyish figure and legs. Her perfectly gamine loveliness came with a mouth.

In her biography on evene.fr, France's leading cultural website, her iconic status is neatly encapsulated as "the model who talks."

Last week, de la Fressange, 51, brought her gift of the gab to Toronto as an ambassador for the Roger Vivier label, named after the great French shoe designer.

The brand was launched five years ago, and de la Fressange, who has been on board since the beginning, sets the tone of the enterprise. A director whose image-building responsibilities have ranged from store design to publicity, she is fond of saying that she thinks of herself as "court jester."

That was the way she did things at Chanel. On the runway, her performances were a mix of hammy antics and moments of sublimely understated glamour.

In conversation, she bubbled droll opinions and basked in irreverence and candour. Backstage in 1987, de la Fressange, singing the praises of a Chanel makeup foundation, told me, "It's not a liquid, it's not a compact, it's like chewing gum."

That spacey, offhand humour remains intact. "What important things have happened since then?" I ask at our interview one morning last week at Holt Renfrew where, later in the day, she will be guest of honour at a cocktail party. "Nothing," she answers, "And you?"

But the voice is deeper, the kookiness darker, the willowy beauty seasoned by times not always sunny. The collaboration with Chanel's Lagerfeld began well enough – with him introducing her to The New York Times as "a most elegant French girl, amusing, very chic" – but ended in a public squabble.

In 1989, de la Fressange accepted the honour to sit for the image of Marianne, an emblem of the French republic that appears on postage stamps and busts in public buildings.

Lagerfeld let loose his notorious tongue. He said it was all too provincial, that he couldn't dress a monument and told the press, "There will be no more Inès."

De la Fressange quit.

The next year for her wedding in the south of France to Luigi d'Ursi, an Italian businessman, art historian and inductee into the Best-Dressed Hall of Fame, the bride packed Yves Saint Laurent, Lanvin and Lacroix and, a year after that, had her own label of clothes and home furnishings.

Predicated on her taste – which runs to jackets, shirts, oversized sweaters, pants and flat shoes – her Paris fashion shop, stocked with both clothes and home furnishings, was an instant must-visit, melting even the rancour of Lagerfeld who sent her a congratulatory note.

Then in 1999, she was fired from her own company by shareholders who held on to the rights to her name.

"I fought for 10 years, but I got fed up. I forgot it," she explains with calm acceptance nurtured by a favourite book, The Art of Happiness by the Dalai Lama.

So far, the biggest challenge to forgetting and faith that de la Fressange has faced has been the loss of her husband – father to her two daughters – who died suddenly of a heart attack in 2006.

She resolved not to burden her children with any stricken widow routine, and supports their dreams. Nine (pronounced "Neen") is 15 and a promising actor; Violette, 9, is a fashion maniac.

Mother doesn't mind.

"Good," she says, "Frivolity, talent, beauty. You can't live without them."

But she could happily live without the idea of superiority of French style, though she is thought to be the very embodiment of it.

Last summer, France admitted de la Fressange's to the Legion of Honour. In the January issue of Interview magazine, she said that it was her mission at Vivier to show that you could be "French without being conventional and grim."

As for "chic," she told Wallpaper magazine, "Nothing comes from chic-ness, no fashion, no art. Chic is when you don't have anything left." ]

The 36-year-old burlesque star has been romancing Count Louis-Marie de Castelbajac, 11 years her junior.

The 25-year-old is the actor-son of fashion designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and ex-wife Catherine de Castelbajac, who dated Bill Koch and the late Ron Silver.

"We’re all shocked they’re together," a friend of Castelbajac told the New York Post.

"She’s really robbing the cradle."

The pair were seen hanging out at the Coachella Music Festival in the US.

Von Teese - born Heather Sweet - married shock rocker Marilyn Manson in November 2005.

She filed for divorce in December 2006 citing "irreconciliable differences" following reports he was dating Evan Rachel Wood, his now girlfriend.

A representative for Von Teese was unavailable for comment.

Another great creative director to leave, Gabrielle Greiss has left French fashion house Sonia Rykiel less than 18 months after becoming creative director of its main fashion line.

Nathalie Rykiel, French fashion house president, told WWD: "We separated by mutual agreement," adding that: "I have put in place a design studio, with a certain number of people under my artistic direction and of course, that of Madame Rykiel." That may conclude it all.

Central Saint Martins-trained Greiss was promoted to creative director in 2007, having worked as Madame Sonia Rykiel's chief assistant for three years. Prior to joining Sonia Rykiel, Greiss had worked at Lanvin, Anna Molinari and Martine Sitbon.

That may be sad but who will replace the creative director position?

Rachael Taylor on New Chloe Store in LA

She gained reputation being one of the rising actress in Hollywood, but the Aussie actress Rachael Taylor fashion style focus on the pants hit the depths of bad taste at the launch of French designer label Chloe's Los Angeles store.

The Tasmanian looked less than comfortable when she fronted up beside the likes of glamour girls Kate Bosworth, Chloe Sevigny and Maria Sharapova at the event, held at LA's Milk Studios.

Hosts Bosworth and Sevigny bagged the best looks from the Chloe collection, leaving Taylor - also dressed by the fashion house - with the label's MC Hammer-style harem pants.

The red-carpet faux pas was a slight hiccup for Taylor, who most recently starred alongside veteran actor Alan Rickman and Star Trek leading man Chris Pine in the US wine flick Bottle Shock.

The 24-year-old star made her name in the US after being cast in the blockbuster Transformers.

Thankfully, it's not all Hollywood glamour parties and movie sets for the actor, who is also studying international relations at Sydney University through correspondence.

World-famous French fashion house Louis Vuitton introduces its women's Prefall 2009 collection. For this collection, designer Marc Jacobs returned to the '40s theme with the mood becoming simpler, the silhouettes softer, the colours more subdued. What remains is the luxury - the lace, the rich embroideries and a touch of fur.

While tailoring remains structured, the focus shifts from the shoulders to the waist, with belted coats and fitted jackets, the latter balanced by pencil-slim or full ballerina skirts. Ladylike sleeves stop just above the wrist, while cropped pants reveal a well-turned ankle.

Dresses play a leading role, with a fitted, short-sleeved dress in beige wool worn over a fine polo-neck for the day; while two softer designs in silk showcase the season's key prints: a bold paisley pattern in rich burgundy and orange stands out on a neat shift, while a ribbon print twirls on a draped dress with a high, ruffled neck.

Blue, burgundy and beige are joined in the colour palette by the staple charcoal grey on a sharply tailored skirt suit, or a full-length belted coat with a broad fur collar.

Black moves elegantly from day to evening with rich textural effects. A sweeping silk gown is edged with lace, while a shocking pink cocktail dress reveals its black lining. The tuxedo comes with wide cropped pants and a jacket worn open over a white ruffled blouse.

The season's stand-out ribbon motif makes its way onto accessories including wool hairclips, high-waisted belts, soft lambskin gloves, retro-chic sunglasses and a short mink polka dot scarf. Fashion jewellery plays on elaborately beaded outsize brooches.

Shoes tower on oversized platforms and high, slender heels. They are given a sophisticated evening feel in richly coloured satin and velvet, embellished with bows, tassels and sequined embroidery.

The bag of the season comes with supple pleats, tassels and a drawstring in a mix of shiny leather and soft monogramme-embossed suede in taupe and brown.

There is simply no stopping ‘Balmania’, the fashion cult that surrounds the distinctive - and hugely expensive - designs created by Christophe Decarnin.

Decarnin is the king of the rock chick revival, the man who has turned the old dowager of French fashion, Balmain, into a bang up-to-date dancing queen.

Gwyneth Paltrow, ‘Bond Girl’ Gemma Aterton, Jennifer Connelly, Diane Kruger and a posse of Vogue-istas have already fallen under the glitzy Decarnin spell.

Now, even Michael Jackson and our own Kate Moss have caught the Balmain Bug - and have been providing exclusive previews of next autumn/winter’s disco-inspired collection.

Jackson, who is due to start a 50-date O2 marathon in London in July, has been photographed wearing the crystal-and-sequin tiger-print T-shirt.

Perhaps it was his reward for the fact Decarnin played Jackson’s ‘Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough’ at the Balmain catwalk show in Paris in March.

‘Mossie’ obviously can’t get enough either. She has tossed aside the vintage pieces she adores in favour of ‘Balmania’. She wore one of Decarnin’s hologram-beaded, body-con ‘bird’ dresses, so-called because the shoulders are like wings - to this week’s unveiling of the ‘White Light’ collection, held at Altitude on the top of the Millbank Tower in London. ‘White Light’ was designed by the avant-garde silversmith and jeweller, Shaun Leane, renowned for his collaborations with Alexander McQueen and Daphne Guinness, and crafted by Steinmetz Diamonds for the Forevermark Precious Collection.

Meanwhile, Beyoncé and Rihanna have had to be content with this summer’s Decarnin for Balmain collection. Both were spotted in Los Angeles in recent days, wearing versions of the embellished military jacket. Rihanna’s braided denim one costs £2,920 on net-a-porter.com; the sky’s the limit for Beyoncé’s crystal-embroidered version.

New Artistic Director of Nina Ricci Paris Fashion House

Paris, France - Peter Copping has been named as the new artistic director at Paris fashion house Nina Ricci. The designer, who previously worked at Louis Vuitton, replaces Olivier Theyskens, who quit prematurely in March.

Copping, who is a graduate from the Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins, told WWD, "I love all the French fashionisms, and Nina Ricci is very much a French house. It's going to feel very close to all the things I personally like."

Copping also added that he wants to shift the French brand's focus to be more women-centric. "I want the clothes to be very tactile, very luxurious - the kind of clothes a woman enjoys wearing," the designer added.

Copping, who previously worked under the creative direction of Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton, will not hold his catwalk show until next March. It will enable him to fully understand the brand, Vogue.com reports.

The 'Harry Potter' actress has met the legendary German fashion designer several times, and admits she was star struck when he photographed her for a recent edition of French fashion magazine Crash.

Emma said: "I'd met Karl a few times before, at parties or something where we really couldn't talk. But this was a dream come true. We spent the whole day together, and he can talk about anything - literature, art, science, modern culture. I was totally seduced. I felt spoiled to be spending so much time with him."

Despite mixing with one of fashion's most renowned designers, the 18-year-old actress - who is rumoured to be starring in an upcoming advertising campaign for British fashion label Burberry - admits she rarely indulges in expensive clothing.

Referring to fairytale character Cinderella, whose expensive clothes disappear if she stays out too late, Emma told Interview magazine: "I don't really buy designer stuff. I have a few nice things, but I don't really have the occasion to wear couture too often. When I'm in a situation where I do need to dress up, I'm typically lent something - which means I have to give it back at midnight, like Cinderella."

Akira Isogawa: Bridal Collection Elegance

Akira Isogawa's move into bridal wear has been an organic one and it is a venture that has his creative juices flowing.

After showing his spring-summer collection in Paris late last year the designer and his team made the decision to formalise a bridal offering, much to the delight of their customers.

Two of the styles from this collection have been made available in ivory and in the upcoming Tough Love range there will be four bridal gowns. Tough Love was launched during Paris Fashion Week in March and is expected to hit stores here in August.

Styles from previous collections will remain in the bridal range for a period of time and can be made-to-order.

"There is such demand for it," he said. "There are some bridal gowns literally with a waiting list because the craftsmanship is very time consuming with hand embroidery and hand crafted textiles, so it takes really three months to deliver to the clients."

The gowns are also available in red and black and feature hand embellishments such as embroidery and origami detailing.

"For me the exciting part of designing bridal wear is I can actually create my own fantasy," he said.

"I could be a little bit more extravagant about usage of fabrication. I could use maybe 10 metres of silk chiffon instead of two metres. When I design ready-to-wear, of course, we have to consider the cost factor but the bridal range allows us to indulge a little bit more in a sense."

Isogawa delivered his spring-summer collection to his Australian stores earlier this month. He showed off some of the pieces at an event at Sydney's The Strand Arcade recently, using the face of the arcade, and last year's Australia's Next Top Model winner Demelza Reveley.

It features stunning gowns using lightweight silk chiffon as well as more structured day dresses.

"The silk is actually my favourite textile to use at the moment because it drapes beautifully and you can actually mould it into your body," he said.

"It is hand painted. Particularly this season we have played with the colour but not necessarily ordinary prints, the hand painting can actually be more dynamic in terms of playing with colours."

A floral motif flows through many of the designs and as they are handpainted, every dress is a one-of-a-kind.

"Every single dress has a character," he said.

The global financial crisis is looming large over every industry and has already netted a few scalps in the Australian fashion world.

Isogawa said his strategy was to focus on his strengths and respond quickly to changes.

"I just continue doing what I've been doing really but a bit tighter and bit more focused," he said.

"Rather than actually trying to shoot three rabbits all at once focus on one rabbit so we'll most likely get it."

Designer Book On The Process

What would you make for the writer who has most influenced your life? The question has been asked of 50 of the world's best-known designers, from the couturiers Christian Lacroix and Paul Smith to the architect India Mahdavi.

Their imaginary creations for authors including Haruki Murakami and Ian Fleming will be shown in a series of exhibitions across Paris until September, and have been collated in Design et Littérature: Une Liaison Inspiré to be published this week.

The architect and designer Claudio Colucci conceived a lounge sofa made from carbon fibre for the James Bond writer Ian Fleming. "I have always liked the fantasy element in design," he said. "Too much function bores me. I thought of creating an amphibious car, but that already exists, so I designed a lounge-sofa for drinking champagne, for two, of course."

The fashion designer Christian Lacroix imagined a mid-20th Century wrought-iron chair for the French novelist, Patrick Modiano. Lacroix said: "I like his form of melancholy; like him, I'm nostalgic."

British designer Paul Smith has sketched a 19th-century-inspired chair, customised with old material, for lyric writer Patti Smith, his "favourite rock literary icon" and modern "capturer of emotions".

The architect India Mahdavi designed a cat-shaped sofa in homage to Japanese author Haruki Murakami. Mahdavi, who chose a cat because the animal appears throughout Murakami's work, said that when she was introduced to the novelist, "it was like entering someone's dream, in a universe where fantasy and reality are mixed".

The writer Esther Henwood said she thought of the idea for the series of exhibitions and the book because of her interest in the relationship between the arts. "The different art forms – music, design, literature, fashion – are seen as being separate," she said. "Yet they are interrelated ...

"All the designers told me how much they love and are influenced by literature in all their work, even if it is not apparent." She said she was so "delighted" by the responses that she told design houses limited editions of the works should be created.

"We are holding a series of exhibitions across Paris," she said. "Some of the works have been imagined for great literary figures, such as Proust, Tolstoy and Flaubert. Others were conceived for contemporary writers who will have the chance to see the designs that have been imagined."

Beret Sales Double Up!

Sarkozy may have come under fire for his protectionist policies during the current financial gloom, but the citoyens are following his lead and storming French stores in search of everyone's favourite nationalistic headwear, the humble beret.

Sales figures have doubled, claim manufacturers in Orlon Sainte Marie, (the traditional beret-making region in the south-west of France), as yuppies, or bobos, as they're known over there, are becoming increasingly disillusioned with American and English influences, and seek to support the domestic economy by buying berets. Today's bobos, goes the theory, are getting back to their roots, looking nostalgically to the rural French idyll - although it remains to be seen whether they'll be accessorising their new headgear with a string of onions.

Originally worn by the guillotine thugs, the beret evolved from the French revolutionaries' red Phrygian caps, (worn by the sans-culottes as a mark of mutiny in the 18th century), and became the typical headgear of rural, and specifically male, agricultural workers in the south west of the country. It was also the chosen hat of the French resistance movement, giving rise to a legend among the French that the side you slant your beret to is an indication of your political stance: if your beret leans to the right, so you do - and vice versa.

It wasn't until the 1920s that the beret became a unisex item, when it was adopted by singer Marlene Dietrich, the first woman to don the paysan garb, and who scandalised society in doing so.

But as a part of French national dress, the item has all but disappeared from everyday life - some older men still wear them, reports one Parisian, but few young men do - and it has largely been adopted by women as a fashion statement. As well it might.

"Like all good hats, berets can accentuate the best features of a person to make them look more striking," says milliner Phillip Treacy, quoting Greta Garbo as his favourite beret wearer. In the mid-20th century it became a symbol of archetypal French glamour, associated with coffee-drinking philosophers like Jean-Paul Sartre (known for wearing his apolitically straight), and Gauloises-smoking starlets like Catherine Deneuve and Brigitte Bardot. The French uniform of matelot or Breton striped tops, teamed with cropped cigarette pants and ballet pumps may seem cliched, but it's as chic as it was when Jeanne Moreau first tripped across a bridge wearing just that in Truffaut's Jules et Jim. As the mark of a rebel, it spans the gamut of 20th-century icons, from Saddam Hussein and Che Guevara to Monica Lewinsky, so there must be something sturdier than mere style behind its universal appeal.

The fact that sale figures have risen may not be a nationalistic shift, but a further development of a trend in contemporary womenswear.

"It's the T-shirt of hats," says Stephen Jones, haute couture milliner. "Whether you're old or young, rich or poor, a beret suits everyone, and it's a very inexpensive way to transform your existing wardrobe. It's instant glamour, on the cheap." And it is this instant glamour that means everyone wants to bag a beret - Parisians are the first to tell you that American and Japanese tourists buy the garment by the armload.

But what of the French designers? Traditionally, they are keen to cash in on the rest of the world's Francophilia. Paris fashion houses Sonia Rykiel and Chanel regularly incorporate the beret in catwalk shows, and it was ubiquitous in both labels' spring/summer collections. But, while this season's autumn shows saw berets on the Milan catwalks (for the Italian labels Armani and Sportmax), the Paris designers seemed to leave them well alone.

Not only that, but Paris-based John Galliano took inspiration from the only nation still spending money, the Russians, while Rykiel (in a shocking change of national allegiance) showed bowler hats, while at Chanel there were squashed pork- pie hats - which seemed more reminiscent of London bankers than left-bank bohemians.

"Girls in Paris do wear berets as an affirmation of their Frenchness," says Jonathan Wingfield, the editor of French fashion magazine Numero, although he senses that there is an equivocal attitude toward the garment. "I wonder if some of this is about people 'shopping in their wardrobe', and wearing old accessories they used to wear when they were younger. To be honest, most of the young people that I see here in Paris are wearing British pork-pie hats, in the style of Agyness Deyn and Pete Doherty - that's what they think is really cool."

French Fashion: A New Beginning, A New Twist

Whole tomes have been written dissecting French fashion. Hem-lengths, the precise cut of a sleeve or the way that darts are placed on the back of a tuxedo jacket are endlessly analysed. Yet the French approach can probably be summed up thus: dress for your man (rather than other women), wear what French women call “bourgeois staples”, and never buy into anything that's too fashionable. These core values, of course, aren't always that appealing to a British sensibility, where we usually prefer pile-it-on exuberance and mismatched dynamism. And yet, there's no denying that style aficionados the world over can't get enough of French labels.

Many of these have been around for years. You may well have heard of Vanessa Bruno, APC, Zadig & Voltaire or Isabel Marant (just some of the labels that we feature in our Parisian style feature on p10-11). For the most part they are rather classic - at least when compared, say, with the bonkers-ness of a Gareth Pugh fetish ensemble. Yet they are also the sort of clothes worn by women that we want to look like - you know, the ones who always do great bed-hair and make smoking (dare I say this?) still look the epitome of cool.

The underlying point of Parisian chic is that it's actually very conservative, even bourgeois and being called bourgeois in France isn't a euphemism for dull. Sales of black berets have doubled since the credit crunch - the symbol of French pride now constitutes a serious fingers-up to the collapse of the Anglo-Saxon economy. Instead, these labels, though all different in some way, are marked by an unifying aesthetic that addresses that very French idea of feeling “bien dans sa peau”, literally, good in your own skin.

The silhouettes are forgiving, anti-ageist and don't mark the wearer out as a fashion-victim. So why not just go to Gap and buy your “classics” there? Well, because the French look is also a little subversive and discreetly sexy (this is where dressing for your man comes into it). It speaks volumes that the Japanese paparazzi who tirelessly circle the fashion media are more interested in photographing the handful of French fashion editors they deem to be the ultimate image and taste-makers, than they are in snapping celebrities.

And despite the growing hype that surrounds brands such as Isabel Marant - which smacks at times of the emperor's new clothes - the popularity of French style continues to grow.

So what explains this resurgence? The vogue for pared-down, minimal lines has lot to do with it. If there's one thing that French women fear most, it's looking as if they have tried too hard or, worse still, that they look vulgar. And vulgarity is nigh-on impossible when all you've done is thrown a slouchy jacket in a neutral tone over a pair of mismatched, tailored trousers. “It's true,” says Val Margulies, co-founder of Aimé in Notting Hill, London, who has stocked APC, Isabel Marant and Les Prairies de Paris for the past ten years: “London style can at times look pretty trashy. You wouldn't see someone one in Paris wearing pink leggings from American Apparel in the way you that might see in Hackney. French girls want to look feminine.”

Just as importantly - and this is where the effect of the recession kicks in - these labels successfully interpret designer tailoring at an affordable mid-price. “What you are getting,” says Margulies “is the quality of designer clothing without the ridiculous prices, and this taps into how we want to shop now.”

Matthew Moore, the manager of The Shop at Bluebird in Chelsea, where French designers make up 40 per cent of the stock, agrees: “Labels such as Isabel Marant are perfect for consumers who want to pay £300 for a gorgeous dress but can't stretch to £1,000. These brands capture the essence of looking individual while sticking to the tailored silhouette that women want at the moment.”

The French may not have anything as vibrant and colourful as the clothes on our high street but our offerings are actually looking a little worn round the edges, as retailers try to figure out how best to survive an economic downturn.

The two-for-£20 tops that last only a season no longer hold the appeal that they once did. And who still gets a kick from bagging a pair of £5 ballet pumps, when we've all seen documentaries on the grim factory conditions for workers in the Far East. “Parisians just don't have that throwaway mentality,” points out Margulies. “These French designers have cornered the market in clothes that look special enough now, but which won't date after a season.”

Perhaps it still takes a dose of British irreverence to bring these sombre-coloured French labels to life, however. There's something undeniably appealing about the way Brits confer “cool” on an outfit. And, in the spirit of friendly rivalry, we wouldn't want to give away the “street style” trophy that we've held on to for the past decade, too easily.

French Elle: Natural Look

Magazine editors seem to have noticed (at last!) that women need to see models and actresses in a truer form, without the work of makeup artists and retouchers to mask their pores, cellulite, and wrinkles. The upcoming issue of French Elle, which hits newsstands this weekend, features Eva Herzigova, Monica Bellucci, Sophie Marceau, Charlotte Rampling, and four other females sans fards, which literally means “without rouge.”

We’re totally psyched to see beautiful women in a more natural, albeit still extremely flattering light. Photographer Peter Lindbergh snapped the women, so they’re not anything like the horribly unattractive candids our friends take of us around 1 a.m. after we’ve ingested a few cocktails, but they’re the closest a fashion magazine is going to get.

Like Italian Vogue‘s black issue, this month’s French Elle is a step in the right direction for fashion magazines, but once a year isn’t enough. Shouldn’t we be able to see celebs looking more like themselves every month? I don’t mean in unattractive photos like the ones tabloids shoot, showing stars’ boogers and dry skin. Natural can be beautiful and at home in a glossy magazine. In this month’s Glamour, there’s a swimsuit story that features a curvy model, and everyone at The Frisky gushed over the model’s hot bod. But the headline reads: “Not a dental-floss-thing kind of girl? Then you’ll love the new old-school Hollywood trend, meant to flatter goddesses of every shape and size.” Why can’t we just integrate natural, more realistic beauty on a regular basis, without calling out the content: This is for all of our non-skinny readers!!!

It is rather wonderful, though, that unlike U.S. magazines that show celebs without makeup, these French Elle photographs make the natural look seem like a good thing. Look how good these women look, even when they let their imperfections show! Our tabloids, on the other hand, only draw attention to stars’ flaws, rather than their innate beauty.

Duty Free Paris, the joint venture between Aéroports de Paris and The Nuance Group, has opened three fashion stores at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport Terminal 2A. The stores will trade under the Attitude brand name, and cover 295sq m in total.

Nuance’s Attitude concept was developed to house key fashion brands in dedicated, personalised space within a single store.

The three Attitude stores measure 70sq m, 92sq m and 133sq m respectively, and feature brands such as Longchamp, Kipling, Samsonite, Thomas Sabo, Swarovski, Hugo Boss, Lacoste, Lancel, Sonia Rykiel, Guess and, for the first time at Paris airports, Diesel, Wolford and Doré Doré.

Each of the stores features an event space that will be dedicated to trendy French brands. The partners said the offer had been tailored to cater for passengers at T2A, which mainly handles flights to North and South America, the Middle East, the UK and Asia.

Duty Free Paris General Manager Guy Bodescot said: “Our new joint venture started up in late January by taking over nine existing stores. These three Attitude concepts now introduced are the first shops really designed and built by Duty Free Paris, our newly set-up joint venture. We are proud to showcase our ability to present fashion brands in an exciting shop environment and look forward to growing our portfolio further in the course of 2009 and beyond.”

Aéroports de Paris Chairman & CEO Pierre Graff added: "The new sales points designed by Duty Free Paris will allow Aéroports de Paris to enhance the fashion and accessories offer. The products and new brands available at Terminal 2A respond precisely to the expectations of Paris-Charles de Gaulle's international clients. By the end of the year, we will have developed these new tailored stores for both Paris airports."

Fashion Designer Michael Kors Exhibit His Works

Museum opened in late February the first exhibition on the work of American fashion designer Michael Kors. The display will be up through Feb. 7, 2010.

Known for his role as a judge in the critically acclaimed television show "Project Runway," Michael Kors is recognized as one of America's preeminent sportswear designers and entrepreneurs.

The collection presented in the exhibition also is part of the legacy of Wendy Zuckerwise Ritter, said Dr. Anne Bissonnette, curator for the Kent State University Museum.

"It looks very put together because it's all from the wardrobe of one woman," Bissonnette said. "All of these are very businesslike. You aren't being flamboyant, you are a billboard for your company."

Bissonnette said that Ritter and Kors met when Kors was presenting trunk shows at Bergdorf Goodman, at the time when Ritter headed the Donna Karan boutique. When the Michael Kors flagship store opened on Madison Avenue in 2000, the recently married Wendy was asked to consider commuting between her new home in Dayton and Manhattan.

"She had developed an impressive clientele," Bissonnette said. "She had a knack for knowing just what her clients wanted. Michael asked her to come to New York, with her client list, when he started his store."

Between 2000 and her death in 2008, she commuted between Dayton and New York, according to information provided by the museum.

In 2010, when the exhibit will end, Michael Kors will celebrate 30 years in business, Bissonnette said. His namesake company, established in 1981, currently produces a range of products through his multiple labels and includes women's and men's ready-to-wear, women's accessories as well as fragrance and beauty products. In addition to his own labels, he designed for the French fashion house Celine between 1997 and January 2004, Bissonnette added. The 14 ensembles featured in the exhibition include garments produced for both his labels and for Celine.

"He makes things that are minimal, very simple but very well-made," Bissonnette said. "They are also very comfortable and chic. It's interesting for us to show this to our fashion students, who sometimes want to create these over-the-top garments that throw everything in. He pays attention to what people want. This is a business, and Michael has been in the business for about 30 years. He's not only a talented designer, but he's a good entrepreneur."

Bissonnette said that Kors described himself as "the oldest young designer in New York City."

According to information provided by the museum, Kors still participates in trunk shows where he spends time on the selling floor with customers, sales associates and merchants.

"I can make something beautiful, but if it doesn't work in real life, then to me it's a disaster," Kors stated in a media release. He stated his design and marketing strategies are not unlike those of Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan, whose shoulders he stands on. Even with his success, Kors remains cautious: "The minute you think you're there, you're done for."

High-end fashion brands are joining forces with artists to boost their image.

Luxury fashion houses have excelled for decades at creating beautiful emporiums in the hope of driving consumers through boutique doors to buy into the dream. These fashion stores can also remind consumers how powerful a brand is with no-expense-spared fit-outs. But as the bar rises and competition stiffens within the luxury industry, so too have the projects commissioned beyond the fashion realm. And it is all in the name of selling more bags, watches, pens, shoes and clothing.

Last week in Hong Kong, French fashion house Chanel officially launched its latest global power project, the ambitious Mobile Art. Commissioned by Chanel's Karl Lagerfeld, the futuristic mobile art gallery was designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid. Created from fibreglass panels, the 700-square-metre multimillion-dollar pavilion took six months to build and will be dismantled seven times to travel the world. For now its home will be Hong Kong's Star Ferry Car Park before it is packed into 65 containers and shipped to six more cities, ending its tour in Paris in 2010.

"The cost is not important. Chanel is about the dream," says Bruno Pavlovsky, director of Chanel's fashion division. "The project is more about building the Chanel image and what you see today is consistent with our vision for the next 10 years." The 20 commissioned artists had free reign to use any creative medium but all works had to be strictly inspired by the 2.55 quilted handbag designed by Coco Chanel in 1955.

Chanel's contemporary artists include Yoko Ono, Sophie Calle, Stephen Shaw, Wim Delvoye and Fabrice Hyber. Mobile Art curator and the editor-in-chief of the magazine Beaux-Arts Fabrice Bousteau says the initial list was "artists that I like - that's what a curator does. And all said yes, so we now have an exhibition with work by artists who have a strong personality and voice in their work."

The most controversial submission is Wim Delvoye's pigskin 2.55 bags (actually made in the Chanel workshop) and two stuffed tattooed pigs, named Jamie and Slobodan.

"We decided not to reject any project," Pavlovsky says. "Chanel herself was controversial, so to have pieces that evoke controversy is OK."

After the French artist Sophie Calle had accepted Chanel's commission, a work conflict led her to advertise in a Japanese magazine seeking an artist to carry out her project. Her vision was to stop passers-by, tell them to empty their bags and offer to buy both contents and the bag they were carrying. Soju Tao won the job with a bag budget of EUR11,000 ($17,794). Tao convinced several Chanel-toting strangers to hand over their bags with one 2.55 in the exhibition containing cash, house keys, a camera, mobile phone, an address book and Shirley MacLaine's book Out On A Limb.

Chanel is not the only luxury brand in recent times to collaborate with artists. Cartier's exhibition space in Paris is at its Foundation Cartier and features the work of contemporary artists and photographers. In 2004, Cartier gave the space to designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, who filled the room with intricate designer dresses made using bread. Hermes has exhibition spaces in its Ginza and Singapore boutiques, and currently has its Hbox mobile video theatre screening work by leading video artists at Paris Pompidou Centre.

In 2006, Louis Vuitton opened its permanent Espace Louis Vuitton gallery on the top floor of the luxury brand's Paris flagship store on the Champs-Elysees. The gallery opened with an exhibition called Alphabet Concept, by New York performance artist and photographer Vanessa Beecroft. Her 13 pictures portrayed nude women wearing clown wigs and with their bodies entwined to shape "LV". Also in 2006, nine artists, designers and architects, including Hadid, were commissioned to create bags for the exhibition space. The seventh and current exhibition, Orients Sans Frontiers, is inspired by the adventures of the automobile from Beirut to Beijing.

Currently running in Melbourne is High Art, a multi-venue exhibition which is part of L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. Taking place on shopping strip High Street, Armadale, Australian designers Scanlan & Theodore, Kirrily Johnston, Lisa Ho, Arabella Ramsay, ksubi, Lee Matthews and Herringbone have collaborated with artists to create installations inside their stores.

Next week Montblanc will take over Sydney's Martin Place with its own "art" installation. Famous for its pens, Montblanc commissioned six contemporary artists and photographers, including David LaChapelle, Jean-Marc Bustamante, Sam Taylor-Wood, Sylvie Fleury, Gary Hume, and Anne and Patrick Poirier to create six shopping bag sculptures. Standing three metres high, the bags have been exhibited on the Champs-Elysees and the Rockefeller Centre.

Designer exhibition spaces have been criticised by the art world, which claims there can be no creative independence when artists are commissioned by a commercial patron.

Yves Carcelle, chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton Malletier, told the BBC at the opening of Espace: "The artists were free in their work. The main difference between art and creativity in fashion is that in fashion you need to sell the product. Art works only if you give it total freedom." When asked if Espace was designed to sell more handbags to tourists, especially the Japanese, who flock to the store to worship the logo-decorated luggage, the answer was: "Sell more handbags? Yes, that's my dream."

Chanel's Pavlovsky is also honest in what Mobile Art hopes to achieve: to sell more bags. "We hope the exhibition will create a strong image for the 2.55. Chanel No. 5 and the fashion already have its own iconic status."

Paris, France — The world's two most glamorous first ladies met Friday on the sidelines of the NATO summit, giving observers an insight into their very different approaches to style.

For the new occupant of the White House, Michelle Obama, a touch of boldness. For the Elysee Palace's Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, wife of the French president, a more classical style. Or so fashion experts in Paris say.

After several years marked by a lack of glamour, the two women had refocused attention on style in the world of politics, Vincent Gregoire, director of creation at the Nelly Rodi trend forecasting agency, told AFP.

They shared another point in common, said Florence Mueller, who teaches at the French Fashion Institute: "The ability to dress in very simple things."

"Carla Bruni can be in jeans, a pullover with a scarf, (and) adopt an extremely simple style with which a lot of women can identify," she said.

Michelle Obama "has herself claimed her ability to dress in very widely sold brands such as J.Crew and Gap," Mueller added.

This was a new development for first ladies, said Mueller: " a very strong message." They showed that you could be elegant on a modest budget.

"The difference will be in the clothes they wear on formal occasions," she added.

Former model Bruni-Sarkozy, 41, goes for French designers, in particular Dior said Mueller: a commitment to French luxury group (LVMH), "to support its interests and development," Mueller said.

For Gregoire, she "has a very French approach to fashion, which is to promote rather upmarket creations."

With lawyer Obama "it is completely different," Gregoire added.

"She never wears the big names or 'vintage' clothes," preferring "to promote an American creativity, an orginality born of diversity."

Obama supports "independent designers with whom she falls in love," Mueller noted.

Isabel Toledo, the US designer of Cuban origin, who designed the pale gold sheath dress and coat Obama wore to her husband's inauguration, "has been fighting for 25 years, not to survive, but almost, in the American commercial world."

Bruni-Sarkozy, for her part, was recently seen in a dress by Alexis Mabille, a rising star in the world of French fashion.

Both first ladies adopted a low profile, said Gregoire.

For Mueller, Obama had found the "exact balance between respect for her status" and creativity.

Bruni-Sarkozy was trying to adopt a more modest image.

But that sometimes meant she ended up looking like an air hostess, said Gregoire, referring to the grey outfits she likes to wear, such as that in Strasbourg on Friday.

"As she has a figure to wear exceptional clothes, when she dresses relatively discreetly and simply, she soon looks a bit like a classic granny. She takes no risks."

Obama's approach was more simple, somewhere between a fashionable housewife and mother of a family, who knows what does and does not suit her, said Gregoire.

But "she is a bit more daring, even if it means getting it wrong," he added.

"We are still waiting for Carla let herself go."

The famous French diss was on the tip of everyone's tongue at the haute couture fashion shows that started in Paris.

While economies around the world crumble, the small band of couture designers snubbed such cold realities and asked their audience to suspend disbelief – to dream.

Christian Lacroix's bride combined full tulle skirts with gleaming embroidered matador jacket. For Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld explored the contradictory elements of floral overstatement and clean modern minimalism all in white. Jean Paul Gaultier's Spanish collection riffed on the sultry flamenco dancer and Picasso's sculptural cubism.

Unlike ready-to-wear collections that are shown in fashion capitals six months ahead of their season, couture shows are mounted just weeks before the time the designs are meant to be worn.

The spring/summer shows, narrowed down to just three days this season, are composed of one-of-a-kind spectacles intended only for the extremely rich. Though the market for such confections may be dwindling, they continue to pitch glamour against the economic odds.

And despite a downturn in the global economy, chances are slim that these luxurious suits and dresses will ever be discounted.

Still, they attract an audience – burlesque star Dita Von Teese, actress Mischa Barton and rapper Kanye West.

For Dior, British designer John Galliano referenced the early days of Christian Dior as well as paintings by 17th-century Dutch masters. Consider a magical mix of billowy puff sleeves, fitted torsos and magnificently giant loopy skirts.

It might seem insensitive to flaunt such excess. But it ain't called haute for nothin'.

As an institution, haute couture is in palliative care. Yet it won't lie down.

And as sure as each passing season it becomes more of an anachronism, its defenders leap to justify its existence.

They wax on about its magical, fantastical nature – how important it is to experiment with the limits of fabric and cut and drape, how important it is to escape the realities of a sometimes hard-knock world.

"Something to make people dream," said Bernard Arnault, chair and chief executive of LVMH Group and Christian Dior, after Monday's show.

While he predicted things wouldn't get better until the end of 2010, many fashion watchers lament that haute couture has been on a long, steady march toward irrelevancy for decades.

John Galliano told reporters: "There is a credit crunch, not a creative crunch. Of course, everyone is being more careful with their discretionary purchases. I am. But it's our job to make people dream, and to provide the value in quality, cut and imagination."

It's not like I'm strapped for cash." Cardin says he hammered out a deal last year, but it fell apart along with the economy. Also, Roberto Cavalli had wanted 1.4 billion euros for his company last July and never got it. So yeah. He and Pierre should do lunch.

I want Pierre Cardin to stay into this business because he's a genius but "business is business". Cardin don't have a choice but to sell it. All of us are affected by the global crisis and one of them makes a move to reconstruct (I guess so). Sulaimi Brookman, whose creations have been spotted on Atomic Kitten star Liz McClarnon and members of the cast of Hollyoaks and Emmerdale, is gearing up to the launch of his first ready-to-wear spring collection.

The 30-year-old Singapore-born designer has taken inspiration from the decadence of French history, with the queen Marie Antoinette and the film Dangerous Liaisons heavily influencing his new collection.

Sulaimi, who moved to Birmingham’s creative hub the Custard Factory 18 months ago, said he was aiming to capture a certain attitude towards dressing represented by the decadent French queen.

The collection will include a mixture of separate pieces, which can be dressed up or dressed down, as well as some key formal evening-wear pieces.

Sulaimi recently showed his collections at a packed-out fashion show as part of the launch of Fazeley Studios in Digbeth, home to the cream of Birmingham’s fashion, design and creative businesses.

Sulaimi started his fashion career in Singapore after studying at the prestigious Raffles Design Institute where he developed his signature tailoring style.

After a period working in upmarket fashion retail at a Versace boutique, he decided to go back to design, setting up his own business in the Custard Factory.

"Gwyneth's style fits perfectly with the brand," Laure Pariente, creative director of ZOEtee's revealed. "She knows how to mix basics and give jersey a stylish edge."

ZOEtee's Loves Gwyneth Paltrow will be released for autumn/winter 2009-10 and all proceeds will be donated to Kids Company, the charity Paltrow chose. The range, which will reference Gwyneth's own style and will feature T-shirts, dresses and leggings, is rumoured to be followed by another collection for spring 2010.

Paltrow joins a list of celebrity contributors which seemingly gets longer by the day. This season she lines up alongside celebrity models, like Alexa Chung who struts her stuff for New Look, and celebrity designers, like Kate Moss who does her thing for the ninth time for Topshop.

Also lending their name to spring fashion on the high street are some design heavyweights tempting the consumer at a more affordable rate; Barbara Hulanicki for Topshop and Matthew Williamson for H&M, as well as new graduates giving us a first taste of their wares at Oasis.

It’s dedicated to the 100-year anniversary of the renowned Ballets Russes company that was a success in Paris in the beginning of the 20th century.

“The collection is very powerful and breathtakingly beautiful. Each item is an object of art,” says Zaitsev. “It’s for those who value beauty in fashion. However, it doesn’t mean that I create clothes that are hard to wear. Despite their artistic value, my creations are functional and comfortable. I’m not a fan of abstract style in clothing. It’s boring. Besides, I have to sell my collections to customers."

Zaitsev says he has always been a strong admirer of aesthetism. “I think even if you put on a white shirt with a black skirt, black shoes, black stockings, and a black hat you’ll look beautiful.”

Despite international success, Zaitsev has always preferred to keep close to his roots, urging Russian designers not to be influenced by the West. Russian folklore tradition has always been an inspiration for him.

Zaitsev says, he has never been a slave to fashion. “The French media once said about Yves Saint Laurent, that he 'walks down the opposite side of the street called Fashion.' The same applies to me. Fashion rules don’t exist for me."

In Soviet times, Zaitsev was the first designer who was allowed to put a label in his clothing. “I’ve been in the fashion business for 46 years. I’ve lived through the '60s, '70s, '80s, and '90s. I’m not interested in re-creating something that’s already been created by somebody. I just try to entice people into the whirlpool of passions, joy, and beauty that exist in my world of fashion”.

Zaitsev’s long-time clients are show-biz celebrities, high-ranking officials, and politicians. The indefatigable fashion designer manages 500 people who work at his own fashion house in the center of Moscow.

Leggings, trainers, scarves, bags and bracelets are daubed with graffiti logos and swirling rose motifs in this season's flashiest colors, including electric pink.

Meanwhile, another French luggage and leather goods specialist, Longchamp, has adopted a surrealist stance with a delightfully cheeky nod to Belgian artist René Magritte, who famously wrote Ceci n'est pas une pipe on his drawing of a pipe. The French brand's spring/summer 2009 collection includes a minimalist canvas shopping tote emblazoned with a drawing of a handbag and the ironic little twist Ceci est un IT BAG.

Will It Bags soon give way to the It Shoe? A change in fashion leather seems afoot. After designing an effigy of himself as a sunglass-wearing teddy bear for Steiff, Karl Lagerfeld has embarked upon another unexpected collaboration, creating a limited edition of summer sandals for Repetto, the French dancewear company, founded in 1947 by the mother of choreographer Roland Petit, that has now branched out into ready-to-wear. Lagerfeld's new patent leather sandals-in the form of towering 4-inch platform heels or more comfortable flats-come complete with detachable leather "tutus" around the ankle. They'll be available starting April 9, and are expected to pirouette right off the shelves.

At the same time, French shoe designer Michel Perry has come up with a novel way of celebrating Barack Obama's arrival in the White House. Putting his own inimitable spin on the Stars and Stripes, Perry has designed a pair of eye-catching sandals, named Vegas, which rework the American flag as foot art.

For luxury shopping with a clear conscience, Dalia and Rose, a multi-brand concept store, is set to open in Paris at the end of March. The boutique, which showcases the latest upscale trends in ethical fashion, lifestyle and design, is the brainchild of Clélia Moretton, a former model now on a mission to promote organic materials and 100% hand-crafted products. With her sharp eye for fashion, Clélia has tracked down a brilliant selection of up-and-coming labels including Camilla Norback, a Swedish designer working with organic silk, organza and cotton; Pachacuti, which claims to sell the world's first fair-trade panama hats; and ethical jewelry by Nikki Butler, a South African designer whose intricate beaded creations, under the label Nikki b, have already been snapped up by the likes of Cameron Diaz and Britney Spears. Dalia and Rose also stock French Touch shoes-adorable ballerina flats that have been ethically sourced-and luxurious alpaca accessories hand-made by fair-trade co-operatives in Bolivia.

Japanese Fashion Designer Kenzo Art Auctions

Paris, France - Vowing to change his life, Japanese fashion designer Kenzo is auctioning off a treasure trove of Asian art, furniture and antique kimonos that adorn his luxury Paris home.

Kenzo, whose full name is Kenzo Takada, has already sold the Japanese-style villa in eastern Paris, complete with paper screens, a swimming pool, and a traditional garden featuring an ornamental pond with carp.

Last month, the sale of late designer Yves Saint Laurent's collection broke several records and Sotheby's has also auctioned the late Gianni Versace's collection, but Kenzo said he was focusing on life before death.

"Today I want to turn a page and live differently, more free, lighter," the 70-year-old told reporters at the villa, surrounded by trees and stones imported from Japan.

The collection is expected to fetch between 1.5 million euros to 2 million euros ($2.04 million to $2.73 million) at auction, scheduled for June 16 and 17.

Together with the Yves Saint Laurent and Gianni Versace events, Kenzo's decision to sell up marks the end of an era for the star couturiers -- as illustrated by a photo on his desk that shows the Japanese designer, tanned and smiling, next to Saint Laurent at the height of their careers.

Highlights of the auction are a Chinese wooden horse dating from the Han era, around 100 AD, estimated at 100,000 euros, and two Chinese wooden funeral figurines dating from 500-300 BC, which are valued at 30,000 to 60,000 euros ($40,000-$80,000) each.

A diplomatic tussle broke out between China and France over two historic Chinese bronze sculptures looted in the 19th century and sold as part of the Yves Saint Laurent collection.

A Chinese buyer snapped up the pieces, but then refused to pay for them.

Kenzo's sale is less likely to attract controversy. He had the 1,100 square-meter villa built 20 years ago, as his empire of colorful, printed clothes and perfumes expanded along with his taste for lavish parties.

Luxury conglomerate LVMH bought the Kenzo brand in 1993.

Having sold the villa to French buyers, Kenzo is planning to move into his new apartment overlooking the Seine -- still generous at 250 square meters.

"At the end of the 1980s. I wanted a Japanese house with a garden in the middle of Paris. My dream came true," he said as he showed reporters his old home.

An Asian art expert looking at a small Korean table and a bronze sculpture of a rat munching a chestnut, described the collection as an "accumulation of beautiful little things."

Paris, France - YOU could call it fashionalism.

At a Vivienne Westwood show, buyer Amanda Ware lists new trends she has spotted in London: quirky hats, trendy scarves - and British-made designer accessories featuring the Union Jack. Several fashion buyers visiting this month's Paris shows reported a jump in nationalist purchases, especially in London, which before the economic crisis prided itself on being the capital of multicultural style.

'I think it's this whole Britishness thing,' said Ms Ware, who buys accessories for luxury store Fortnum & Mason in London. In the boom years, the French and Italian brands she stocks were more popular than British ones, she said. That has changed.

Ms Ware has adjusted her purchases accordingly, buying visibly British accessories such as a Paul Smith scarf with a London city print, which she expects to do well despite the general retail slump.

'There's been a lot of support for both Vivienne Westwood and Paul Smith, it's been the strongest this season,' she said.

'Vivienne Westwood is more tartan, Paul Smith is strong with the Union Jack. It's really flown over the past 8-12 weeks.'

From workers protesting against foreigners taking jobs to governments bailing out failing local industries, fashion executives point to a global wave of nationalist protests and policies since the world economy turned sharply down.

The World Bank said in a report this month that since last November, 17 of the G20 nations had implemented measures whose effect is to restrict trade at the expense of other countries.

'The trend in protection is up and the full effects (of) recession have not yet been felt,' said the report by Elisa Gamberoni and Richard Newfarmer.

The patriotic shopping spree suggests such nationalism is seeping into the middle classes, steering those who can afford designer accessories costing several hundred pounds.

Power dressing with Parisian flair was on display on the Yves Saint Laurent runway. Stefano Pilati did the season’s tough-chic vibe best, with pieces that are truly timeless instead of costumey 1980s throwbacks. A glossy black biker jacket with a subtle studded collar, white poplin shirts with volume through the sleeves, a high-waist pinstripe pencil skirt with a cummerbund belt, an elongated pinstripe jacket to wear with anything — even on its own. This collection was about real clothes for real women who go to the office, the grocery store and a dinner party, all in one day. Pilati even had the sense in these recessionary times to dispense with the tedious red carpet gown finale and instead show a version of Le Smoking, a black velvet tuxedo dress with a plunging collar.

Comme des Garcons

The quiet show, a poetic fusion of masculine and feminine, was a reminder that the avant-garde is alive and well. Models’ faces were wrapped in pieces of tulle with a glittery red lip print off to one side, like a parting kiss. The collection began with the idea of a simple Army jacket, shown deconstructed, spliced together with panels of soft plaid or check blankets, then marked with white trompe l’oeil line drawings of pockets, hinting at a missing person or an alter ego. The looks flowed seamlessly, jackets and cozy blanket leggings into romantic skirts and finally, sheer peach double layer dresses with pearls and bits of tulle trapped inside like fading memories.

As you know, the runways are meant to be a source of artistic expression, not just trends. And the look from catwalks around the world are more cause to stop, stare and wonder.

Even if your first thought might be, what the heck were they thinking? It’s not as far-fetched as it looks.

Inspiration is all around and it is the outlandish ideas that ultimately influence more conservative looks.

Without the outrageous tilting one end of the scale, how else would we ever strike a balance.

Karl Lagerfeld unveiled his autumn 09' Chanel Collection to a star studded audience! Kate Moss looked great as she came out to see the Parisian House unveil its new (and very expensive) threads for fall. The supermodel looked timeless in a form fitting tuxedo jacket. Moss channeled her Katharine Hepburn as she paired the jacket with oversized pants that had great detailing at the bottom. We love that she kept her hair and makeup light and let her outfit speak for itself.

Also in attendance was a wrinkle free Claudia Shiffer who showed up in classic Chanel Tweed. The super model rocked the Chanel skirt with black leggings, great Chanel heels, a white blouse, and a Chanel purse to top things off.

Not to be out done Lily Allen and Milla Jovovich also got into the Chanel act. Allen looked cute in classic white Chanel with black trim while holding onto her white Chanel bag. Jovovich looked adorable sporting the latest headband trend. She paired the hairpiece with a gorgeous off the shoulder Chanel Jacket, white skirt, and pink belt. .

All the ladies looked especially French in their Chanel. And the show may be over, but they will always have Paris.

Paris Fashion Weekend: Dior And Givenchy

Fashionistas lucky enough to be in Paris were spoilt for choice as some of the industry's biggest names presented their autumn/winter collections.

Christian Dior's John Galliano kicked off proceedings on Friday with an exotic oriental-themed show aimed to "restore a sense of fantasy to the world". Genghis Khan-style fur-trimmed hats, brocade tunics, harem trousers and pieces in vibrant-hued silk and chiffons featured in what was a defiantly luxe collection from the top French fashion house.

The black fishnet tights attached to the invitation to Saturday's John Paul Gaultier show forewarned of the risqué tone to the Frenchman's latest collection. With coats, dresses and even boots made edgier with fishnet-filled apertures, the theme of the day was exposure, right down to the visors covering some of the models' eyes.

And unusual headwear was something explored by fashion maestro Karl Lagerfeld as he opened Sunday's schedule. Working in collaboration with a motorbike helmet manufacturer, the Hamburg-born designer presented a military-themed show that allowed for experimentation with shoulder silhouettes, one of next season's key looks.

Flamboyant French designer Christian Lacroix also embraced sharp shoulders in his show, emphasised by gathered or puffed sleeves. The normally opulent craftsman, who stated he had to "fight with (him)self" to keep his designs simple, presented a relatively minimalist collection that included tailored day dresses in navy and black and full-skirted cocktail gowns.

Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci, a designer known for his gothic touches, presented a collection dominated by black that was dramatically broken up by a pure white section of the show. One memorable highlight included a dress made of hair that stood alongside garments with tufts sprouting from the shoulders, and elaborate headdresses laden with plumes of feathers.

French Vogue Tighten Its Belt

Paris, France -- No one was expecting it, but there it was. The "f" word so rarely uttered in the world of high fashion had just slipped through the lips of one of the world's most stylish women.

"I think we need to become more frugal," says Carine Roitfeld, editor in chief of Vogue Paris. "Not on quality," she hastens to add, "just on organization."

The fashionista's favorite fashion editor is sitting on a leather chair in her sparse white office. The shelves are all but empty. There's no in tray on her desk and certainly no computer, "they're not my specialty," she shrugs.

An orange blossom candle twinkles in its glass casing and pictures stand -- some still in their wrapping -- against the wall.

She's been in this office for eight years but it looks like she moved in last week. She hasn't even had time to hang her pictures, and it's not hard to see why.

Every month, Roitfeld and her small team pull together what is considered to be the world's most fashion-forward magazine.

Vogue Paris may have a fraction of the circulation of its American stable mate -- 139,000 versus 1.3 million -- but what it lacks in numbers it makes up in prestige.

Still, Roitfeld recognizes that even the upper end of the magazine market is not immune to the deepest global recession in decades.

She's prepared to make cuts. And rather than begrudgingly canceling a coffee order or two, she's almost relishing a return to the pre-boom days when challenges were overcome with creativity rather than cash.

"It's become ridiculous," she tells CNN, explaining that where once eight people may have gathered around a table to discuss a photo shoot, now there are 25.

"Some things got too far away. There were people who were flying private jets -- we need to go back to reality.

"I don't want to take the money out of the beauty of the picture, I don't want to change the paper of the magazine, I don't want to change the materials, but we can do it another way."

"When it's more difficult you have to be more creative."

CNN's Revealed joined Roitfeld and five members of her team as they gathered round a glass table to choose the cover of the April edition of French Vogue.

It doesn't happen often -- usually the cover is a fait accompli -- but this time U.S. actress Scarlett Johansson has confused the issue by unexpectedly dying her hair.

"This cover, it was very difficult," Carine explains, "because we want people to recognize Scarlett and then she changed her hair color."

Three mock-ups lie on the table; different fonts, colors and wording cover Johansson's lascivious poses. It's clear which one Carine prefers and, rather predictably, it's her choice that will hit news stands this week.

"I think this is a Vogue image and I want to stick to being Vogue," she says of her decision. "The cover is like the publicity for your magazine. It's very important. We need the more appealing one, the more visible one."

Carine Roitfeld was a highly respected and well-connected fashion stylist with no experience in magazine editing when she took the job as editor-in-chief at Vogue Paris in early 2001.

She was already an old friend of renowned photographer Mario Testino; they met 25 years ago when both were yet to make their names. He's now Godfather to her two children, Vladimir and Julia, who are 28 and 27 respectively, and who both now live in New York.

Roitfeld and Testino later teamed up with U.S. designer Tom Ford during his first years as creative director at Gucci to reinvigorate the brand with an innovative advertising campaign.

Roitfeld was approached by Jonathan Newhouse, chairman of Conde Nast International to take the role at French Vogue.

During her time there, advertising revenue has increased almost 10 percent and circulation is up 27 percent. "It is probably a 'Carine effect'," concludes Xavier Romatet, the president of Conde Nast Publications, which owns Vogue magazine.

"Carine's probably the most creative person I've met in my life," he told CNN, describing her as a savvy business woman with a finely-tuned intuition as to what her readers want.

Roitfeld scoffs at suggestions that she has an acute business mind, saying "I think I'm a terrible business woman."

Still, what she's doing at French Vogue is obviously working and despite persistent rumors that she may soon announce her departure, she insists she has no plans, as yet, to leave.

"I'm very happy here," she tells CNN, before adding cryptically, "but I'm sure something new is going to happen in the next year."

Many in the industry have tipped Roitfeld to replace Anna Wintour in New York, should the esteemed editor of American Vogue choose to retire. Read more about Roitfeld's views on the New York job

Roitfeld says she hasn't been approached about the job and if she was she probably wouldn't take it.

"Of course you'd be proud to be offered a job at this Vogue, because it's the biggest Vogue.

"But I'm not sure I'd be happy to work at the biggest Vogue. It's too big; you have to talk to too many different people. I'm very happy at French Vogue to be able to do everything -- almost everything -- I want to do in the magazine.

"Anyway my husband doesn't want to go," she adds later with a smile.

Roitfeld is anxious not to feed any speculation of a competitive rift between her and Wintour, referring to her U.S. counterpart as the "First Lady" of fashion.

"Anna does a great job... I respect her a lot," Roitfeld says.
